ezc203 Posted April 13, 2010 Share #4 Posted April 13, 2010 Interesting thread Wilfredo, I'm sure this will spur lots of conversation. I, too, am very curious as to which lenses are deemed "the best of the best of the best, sir".
leicanut2 Posted April 13, 2010 Share #5 Posted April 13, 2010 Hmm, all the stuff I have read they really praise the 280mm R rom the new 90mm m lens and 50mm lux m lens. But really I have seen some great pictures taken with many older lens like the tele elmar 135mm for example. I think it is really hard to pick, most if not all are good to great lenses. stunsworth Posted April 13, 2010 Share #6 Posted April 13, 2010 Define best. Otherwise there's no answer.
andybarton Posted April 13, 2010 Share #7 Posted April 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 280 R is rubbish for wide angle shots. I don't think that this is a question that can really be answered, unless you add a focal length to the question. e.g. The best 35mm, The best 50mm. Even then, it's all subjective. rob139 Posted April 13, 2010 Share #8 Posted April 13, 2010 I think it must be the lens that Henri Cartier Bresson used. Best, Rob
gverdon Posted April 13, 2010 Share #9 Posted April 13, 2010 Clearly, for me, the one which suits best my current needs, in a photographic way; surely not a technical/abstract "objective" evaluation... Cheers, Gérald
lct Posted April 13, 2010 Share #10 Posted April 13, 2010 The best things are those giving me the feeling that they have no defect whatsoever. Too rare moments when a restaurant or a bottle of something makes me forget the price i paid for it. From this viewpoint i would hesitate between one Apo-Telyt-R 280/4 before the lumbago and one focus-tabbed Elmar-M 50/2.8 from 1994 afterwards. bill Posted April 13, 2010 Share #11 Posted April 13, 2010 Best is, as has already been said, personal and subjective. On that basis, for me, it comes down to a lens that means my camera is with me, whilst still delivering superlative results. Thus my vote goes to the 50mm 2.8 Elmar-M as offering the best balance of quality, speed, handling and portability. Regards, Bill

SJP Posted April 13, 2010 Share #13 Posted April 13, 2010 the answer is obvious 50/1.4 ASPH (and I do not own this lens)
earleygallery Posted April 13, 2010 Share #14 Posted April 13, 2010 The Summar is sublime. The 5cm 3.5 Ltm Elmar is amazing for such a tiny lens and the 35 Summicron R Mandler is legendary.
lct Posted April 13, 2010 Share #15 Posted April 13, 2010 And you don't own those lenses either?
yanidel Posted April 13, 2010 Share #16 Posted April 13, 2010 Not sure this is the best, but of all the Leica lenses I have owned or tried, the 35mn Lux Asph is definitely my favorite.

Regards, Bill The best lens is the one you have with you so the 50mm Elmar-M will take some beating in my opinion. The lens which has astounded me the most overall and which I miss was the 180mm APO Telyt-R.
beewee Posted April 14, 2010 Share #18 Posted April 14, 2010 Like most things in the digital age, the best lens is... the one that has yet to be made.
sm23221 Posted April 14, 2010 Share #19 Posted April 14, 2010 The "best" I've ever used is the Noctilux 0.95, hands down.
doug_m Posted April 14, 2010 Share #20 Posted April 14, 2010 Its pretty hard to beat the 50 lux ASPH as an "all around best" if one has to pick just one.
