Marquinius Posted January 26, 2011 Share #204 Posted January 26, 2011 It is rather a dull job, but I'll update the "list" again, so everyone can download the total overview. And no, I'm NOT going to enter everybody's favorites Grumble grumble playing secretary for the whole forum grumble grumble. And don't forget Kenneth was the originator of this great idea!

Marquinius Posted January 28, 2011 Share #206 Posted January 28, 2011 So here we go again: an updated list. PLEASE READ THIS: do not add photographers that are already mentioned. This is NOT a poll, but a listing of (acknowledged) B&W photographers. Oh, and do me a favor: add names per line, it's a hassle untangling all that extra info and adding it into excel. You can download the list here, or see it here: Abbas Berenice Abbott Michael Ackermann Robert Adams Ansel Adams Nubar Alexanian Neil Ambrose Diane Arbus Eve Arnold Eugene Atget Jane Evelyn Atwood Richard Avedon Ragnar Axelsson David Bailey Roger Ballen Lee Balterman Lewis Baltz Bruno Barbey Gabriele Basilico Letizia Battaglia Cecil Beaton, Bernd & Hilla Becher Bellocq Ruth Bernhard Eva Besnyö Israëlis Bidermanas Ilse Bing Werner Bisschoff John Blakemore Karl Blossfeldt Pat Booth Eduard Boubat Margaret Bourke-White Jane Bown David Bradford Nick Brandt Bill Brandt Brassai Marija Braut Manul Alvarez Bravo Zana Briski Lynn Bullard Wynn Bullock Renni Burri Renee Burri Harry Callahan Julia Margaret Cameron Robert Capa Paul Caponigro Keith Cardwell David J. Marquinius Posted January 29, 2011 Share #208 Posted January 29, 2011 Still missing Larry Clark. Otherwise, the list looks pretty exhaustive for published B&W photographers. surfer dude Posted January 30, 2011 Share #209 Posted January 30, 2011 Thanks a lot for undertaking that massive job Marco. That is an impressive list and a valuable resource. Is it too late to add Eikoh Hosoe? I just got is book Kamaitachi and he should most certainly join this illustrious list.
Marquinius Posted January 30, 2011 Share #210 Posted January 30, 2011 No worries, Phil, I'll update the list in a couple of weeks and make sure Eikoh Hosoe is on it.
wattsy Posted January 30, 2011 Share #211 Posted January 30, 2011 Whilst you are it, Marco, you might consider adding: Notable omissions: Nobuyoshi Araki Nadav Kander (discussed earlier in the thread) Two well known VII shooters: Marcus Bleasdale Antonin Kratochvil Maybe less well known but decent: Markéta Luskačová
nhabedi Posted February 12, 2011 Share #212 Posted February 12, 2011 Not a single photographer, but a whole bunch of them, and all doing B&W exclusively: grey | a black and white photobook I found this by accident in the signature of a German forum member. Great stuff!
LondonR Posted February 12, 2011 Share #213 Posted February 12, 2011 Harry Lapow. The Coney Island series has a Martin Parr feel to it, although Lapow was working decades earlier. Harry Lapow photographs
stephen.w Posted February 13, 2011 Share #214 Posted February 13, 2011 While we're at it, there's also David Goldblatt. The exhibition of his that I went to the other day was made up solely of B&W wet prints. David Goldblatt :: Photographer

Mike Shimwell Posted February 27, 2011 Share #216 Posted February 27, 2011 I would add Gus Wylie for The Hebrideans. He also worked in colour, but that was a 30 year labour of love and well worth searching out. Mike
nhabedi Posted April 7, 2011 Share #217 Posted April 7, 2011 I bought two books with B&W photos recently which I both like quite a bit (and which both incidentally were shot with "toy" cameras). One is Tangente by Laurent Chardon and the other one is Elsewhere by Øyvind Hjelmen. I think both photographers weren't mentioned in this thread yet. Also, I think I already mentioned him (see my signature), but didn't spot him in the long list: Klavdij Sluban. Highly recommended.
AlexM. Posted April 8, 2011 Share #218 Posted April 8, 2011 It seems that every photographer who has ever put bw film into his camera has inspired at least one other photographer :-)
alun Posted April 8, 2011 Share #219 Posted April 8, 2011 Someone who I think may not have been mentioned: JOhn Dominis. See his book SINATRA: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF A VERY GOOD YEAR for stunning B&W photographs that combine unfaltering technical expertise, brilliant timing and great intimacy. Maybe you need to like Sinatra (or at least the mid-60s period covered) but to me the book was a revelation.
stephen.w Posted April 10, 2011 Share #220 Posted April 10, 2011 There is a very good photo essay (all in B&W) by Saiful Huq Omi on the Bangladeshi ship-breaking industry, which appears in the Spring 2011 volume of Intelligent Life (a spin-off publication from The Economist). Highly recommended.
