Who hasn't bought an M9 and why?

I'm afraid I don't know enough about photography to make best use of it. Frustratingly, I do already know that I want a high-quality, digital, full-format camera that is as small as possible...Mmmm9:rolleyes:

I think owning a small japanese designed camera or a large dSLR will give you that feeling that "I don't know enough about photography." Fact is that those cameras are so complicated you can't know what's up and down.

The great thing about the M simplicity is that you can rather fast learn how things work. After all, it's basically only adjustment of the amount of light. That's all there is to it, and the M9 is about that. Not all other stuff.

I didn't buy one, first of all because I'm way short in funds (I've invested in lenses) and second because I'm waiting for a second series with the troubles fixed up. Third I'm no guy born to stay in a waiting list. Will buy one when I can get into a shop, point for it and get out with the camera in my hands after paying the due.

Probabilmente ci penserò a metà dell'anno prossimo.

Along with my M8s and Canons I used an M9 constantly for a week thanks to the generosity of a colleague who happened to be going on a week-long shoot that called for different equipment (I loaned him all 3 of my Canon TS-E lenses in return). I found that I still needed to use IR filters on the M9 in some instances, but there was no in-camera correction for the cyan drift, so an added step in post for me. I found that needing to light the rear screen to see shot count and battery condition brought me unwanted negative attention in the darkened theatres where I shoot frequently. I found the 1 metre framelines an unpleasant backslide from the 2 metre framelines in my upgraded M8s and 8.2. I thought Leica was finally listening to pros again, but evidently not. The improvement in high-ISO noise was disappointingly little compared to the performance of my Canons. It seemed that Leica put all their focus on making full-frame work, leaving other issues only partially solved, and backsliding on others. And as a long-time professional user of full-frame digital, the 1.3 crop of an M8 is not the earth-shattering issue it seems to be to hobbyists. I think the M9 is a fine camera, but for the CDN$7500 it would cost me after trade of an M8, it is not a worthwhile expense for me (note that I do not refer to a camera as an "investment", not even a Leica ;)). Perhaps when the next model appears, which I suspect will be Photokina 2010, I will be able to buy a barely-used M9 for 2/3 of the current cost--perhaps even from someone here! Then perhaps I might consider it as a replacement for one of my M8s, so I can use my 12mm lens at its full FOV, it being the only FOV which can't be effected on an M8 by substitution of a wider lens. Or perhaps there will be an M9.2 in Spring 2010 that will incorporate the good M8 features deleted (top screen, 2m framelines, sapphire glass) and have firmware to correct cyan drift when IR filters must be used, and I may buy one even if it has the same sensor. Or, I may just wait until Photokina 2010 for an M10 with a sensor that has at least as good high-ISO performance as my Canons.

PS: The colleague who loaned me his M9 has since sold it to a friend (amateur), having decided it did not suit him for much the same reason it did not suit me. He continues to use a pair of M8s.

I was hoping for the high ISO smear and waxy skin of my $8,000. CMOS Canons. Instead I get these irritatingly crisp images with sublime detail. Now I have to photoshop all these images with Gaussian Blur. Grrr.

Perhaps even more exasperating, I cannot brag on the internet that I used ISO 25,000 for a shot that could have been done at 1000. I can't wait to squeeze ISO 100,000+ into an online conversation touting the my latest Nikon.

I was depressed to near suicide to find the squinty little frame count window missing from the M9 ... I loved it so when I whipped out my flash light to see it when shooting in a dark conditions ... it was all so theatrical.

Oh, and don't get me started on the missing IR filters I so dearly loved on the M8 ... gone are those charming double reflections of specular highlights that were always such a good conversation starter with clients.

I am most angry about the fact this is all so small for so much money. My Nikon D3X LOOKS like it cost $8000. to all the bimbos I try to impress ... where this puny thing looks like a P&S that everyone and her brother has. $7,000. to $8,000. should buy a manly man's camera ... so the chics can heft it, and exclaim how strong I am while stroking my biceps.

Not to mention the inept dealer didn't have a second M9 so I could off load the back-up M8 before it's worth less than a 15 year old M6.

: -)

I still haven't bought a M9 and I don't think I will. Even though my money/income has picked up lately.

After reading of the problems that have plagued the M9 and that it is slow, and that won't improve because of the base electronics in the camera, I really don't feel like being a beta tester again for Leica at my expense.

Since I already have the first digital M, a M8, that still take stellar images I'll wait for the next version that maybe Leica will finally get right out of the box.

With each passing day, the M9 becomes even less and less appealing to me. I still prefer the IQ of the M8, overall. Let's see what the M10 looks like, but at $9000.00, I doubt I will be interested in that either.

I know you don't own an M9 - neither do I - could you point us towards the photographs that have led you to believe that the M8 posseses the better image quality?

I absolutely cannot understand that! I love my M8's but the M9 is full-frame and 18MP. What's not to like? This is the digital camera that I have been waiting for since I switched from film Leica M's to digital Canons (only because there was no digital Leica M!!) They said it couldn't be done, but they did it. Why would you prefer the IQ of the M8? I have both and, for anything important, I'll use the M9. My M8s will hold other lenses until I can afford two more M9's!!
