farnz Posted April 16, 2009 Share #1 Posted April 16, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) If anyone's interested I just noticed that there's an unused gold M3 for sale on eBay. The ad says "This special series of 1000 R3 bodies and 50mm 1.4 Summilux lens in Gold plate with a black reptile skin and mahogany presentation case was produced to commemorate the centenary of Oskar Barnack's birth on November 1st 1879." The buy-it-now price doesn't seem astronomical for such a piece but then I have no knowledge of what a reasonable price should be. (For full disclosure: I have no connection to the goods for sale.) Pete.
Advertisement Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Hi farnz, Take a look here Gold R3 and 50 Summilux-R Set. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted April 16, 2009 Share #2 Posted April 16, 2009 It seems reasonable - nice for a collector. But it must be one of the most ugly Leicas ever produced....
farnz Posted April 16, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted April 16, 2009 ... But it must be one of the most ugly Leicas ever produced.... I quite agree, Jaap, but I expect that it would excel at keeping doors from swinging shut. Pete.
lct Posted April 16, 2009 Share #4 Posted April 16, 2009 Platinum is more classy.
NZDavid Posted April 17, 2009 Share #5 Posted April 17, 2009 <<This Leica Gold R3 has never been used or had a battery installed. It has been in my customers bank safety deposit box since new.>> Since 1979. Poor thing. You have got to feel sorry for it. Surely it would like to see some film. rob_x2004 Posted April 17, 2009 Share #7 Posted April 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need lots of Jaaps roflmfao smilies. "The only small scratch on the body is on top of the viewfinder there is a small 3/8" scratch in the finish, not deep, very light, otherwise the camera is Mint." Wonder how the guys ... "investment" will fare.
stuny Posted April 17, 2009 Share #8 Posted April 17, 2009 PasMichael - Thank you for posting the photo. Other comments of it's being ugly did not do it justice. The photo shows that it transcends ugly to a new, much more extreme word which has yet to be coined.
earleygallery Posted April 17, 2009 Share #9 Posted April 17, 2009 It's a little bit bling isn't it? I can't imagine actually using it but it would be a talking point. I hope no one is suggesting that the R3 itself is ugly - I love mine (black finish).
Mystic Posted April 17, 2009 Share #10 Posted April 17, 2009 I think the golden R3 doenst look that bad but I would like to own this wonderful camera .
SteveYork Posted April 17, 2009 Share #11 Posted April 17, 2009 I think the R3 looks quite nice. If it wasn't for the dim viewfinder I keep hearing about, I may actually have one. When it comes to SLRs my hands seem to favor the bigger ones, but a gold camera seems a little crazy. You might as well be carrying a sign that says "Steal Me." Although who would want to steal a film camera now days.
earleygallery Posted April 17, 2009 Share #12 Posted April 17, 2009 Dim viewfinder Have you tried one?
andybarton Posted April 17, 2009 Share #13 Posted April 17, 2009 The viewfinder on the R4 is definitely not dim. I have one and use it. Not as good as an R8, but definitely not dim.
stunsworth Posted April 17, 2009 Share #14 Posted April 17, 2009 Andy, as an R4 and R8 owner I agree.
SteveYork Posted April 17, 2009 Share #15 Posted April 17, 2009 No, I never tried an R3, but one of the common complaints for the camera is that, relative to other R models, it has a dim viewfinder. I'm just parroting what I've read. Coming right after the SL2 probably didn't help in comparison. But is that wrong?
PasMichiel Posted April 18, 2009 Share #16 Posted April 18, 2009 PasMichael - Thank you for posting the photo. Other comments of it's being ugly did not do it justice. The photo shows that it transcends ugly to a new, much more extreme word which has yet to be coined. It's not the camera, it's the color. No, what I really find strange: When selling a Leica such bad pictures are made from them.
earleygallery Posted April 18, 2009 Share #17 Posted April 18, 2009 Steve, IMO the R3 has a nice clear crisp uncluttered finder, certainly not 'dim' compared to most other SLRs. I think you have read/heard that the SL finder is superior - not for me due to its cut off rounded corners, which I really find irritating and the same on the M3 50mm framelines (but at least there you can see what is beyond the cut off points). patashnik Posted April 19, 2009 Share #18 Posted April 19, 2009 I actually own one of those! It really is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. But at the price I paid, it's almost worth keeping for the entertainment value. Almost.
barneybm Posted April 20, 2009 Share #19 Posted April 20, 2009 I used my R3s for 25 years without a single need for service. I now have several R8s and R9s, and an M8, but for me, the R3 was -- by far -- the greatest Leica I ever used. The viewfinder is NOT dim. You can focus perfectly, and, I think, faster than on an R9. All the controls are in exactly the right place. So, for me, the camera was perfectly designed and perfectly reliable. What more could you ask for? And finally, I like the look of the R3. JBA Posted April 20, 2009 Share #20 Posted April 20, 2009 It would be fun to get one of those gold cameras, paint it black and then deliberately give it some brassing! The only person I've witnessed carrying a gold Leica (M6, as I recall) struck me as a buffoon who needed to be the center of attention of an endlessly fawning group.
