Why did you sell your DMR?

And, do you now regret doing so? Or, you're glad to be done with it, and move on to [insert name here].

I ask because I'm about to take the plunge on (I believe) the last new DMR available in North America.

I need longer focal length and more reliable focus on those long lenses than I can get with a 90 on the M8.

Thanks.

Dean

I'm guessing those who had sold theirs in anticipation of an illusory "R10" are all feeling greatly regretful right now.

If there's anything in the R system whose price will go up like Jaap has said before, it is the DMR IMO.

I don't think the DMR will increase in price but will continue to be a sought after camera just like the Digilux 2 which is priced quite fair for those who want to part with it after 3-5 years of use, and extremely fair prices for those looking for them.

Dean -

I love mine and most highly recommend it. There are a few caveats, such as having to clean the sensor frequnetly, cleaning all contacts (including those on the battery itself) periodically, and its size and weight. I still love it.

Dean,

I didn't eventually buy a DMR because I couldn't find one at the right price (for me). I still have a hankering for one but limited battery availability would factor heavily in my decision if I found one at an attractive price.

I agree with Thorsten that the DMR will continue to be a sought-after camera and I think it will also become a 'cult' camera like the D2 whose true value will only be realised by many after it's been out of production for a few years and nothing else has quite managed to fill the hole that was left. After all, those R lenses produce exquisite results and the DMR produces exquisite pictures and providing that batteries are available that's not going to change despite whatever new, shiny gear hits the streets in the years to come.

It's a different road, but if the DMR doesn't work out you might like to consider a Visoflex III, which will allow you to attach long lenses to your M8 and will offer reliable focus.

Pete.

Farnz I still think it delivers better files than the M8 but its old and attaches to a dog of a camera.

I will not sell the one I own even if/when an R10 is announced. Took it to Italy last Summer and I was really pleased with its handling and the results. I would consider another one if I could find one in perfect condition.

As to the R8/R9 being a dog of a camera, well, that is an opinion. I have always used SL2s, and they now sit in a cabinet on display with two of my M5s. In the last two years, I have switched to R9s with no regret. For Me, they feel good in the hand, they handle well and they are well balanced.

Rob,

I can't disagree with you about the files it delivers (because sadly I don't own one and can't compare). I have an R9, which I think is a well designed camera that is very pleasant to use. A dog? Not to me.

Yes, the DMR's 'old', but so are LTM cameras, which still produce excellent pictures in the right hands. If you mean out of date then perhaps so but, again, shouldn't the DMR be judged on the pictures it can produce rather than the absence of the latest super-duper features, providing of course that its functionality doesn't negatively affect the act of taking pictures or the results it produces? :)

Couldn't possibly disagree with this statement more. Absolutely the opposite of what I see and believe. I love the R8/R9 and the DMR mounted on them is perfect for me.

I sold mine because I was not able to focus efficiently with it. Also, I was not using it a lot anymore because the M8 suits my needs better.

But I still regret the image quality, the colors, the lack of IR contamination...

And yes, I find the RAW files superior to the M8 (and to many of other brands cameras I've used).

I sold mine for the same reason as Pascal....I noticed that in the last year or so it was becoming more difficult to focus quickly enough for me. (My problem not the camera!)

However I was also aware of the ageing DMR technology as well as me, and also the lack of replacement batteries and other spares. I therefore decided to cut my losses and go AF (a very big decision for me). I replaced it with a Sony A900 full frame 24.6 Mpx full frame camera which is the nearest I could get to the Leica in it's intuitive handling. I like the very large and bright viewfinder and for me even more importantly, auto-focus Zeiss lenses with superb definition and contrast. I am now back to street photography again which I have instinctively tended to stear away from for the last year or so because of the time it took me to focus manually. It is against the rules of this forum to post any sample images from other cameras but suffice to say I am a very happy bunny again!

I have bought a D-Lux-4 to stay in the Leica camp and I will look at the R10 if it ever appears, with much interest......but it would have to be very, very good to tempt me away from my Sony/Zeiss outfit.

I just bought my DMR back in October, when we were in Germany. I got a really good price at a dealer in Cologne. Yes it was cheaper than what I could have bought it here in the US, I saved about $750. Once I had the R8 updated to work correctly with the DMR, it has been the perfect DSLR for me. A bit heavy, but so it the Canon 1DsMKIII, and the Nikon D2&3. As for lack of battery availability, they are still available, I bought some a month ago. Even if they do stop making them, you can go to a battery provider, such as Batteries Plus and have your old ones rebuilt with fresh battery cells. I love the simple menu of the DMR which I believe is even simpler than the M8 menu. As for the R8/9 being a dog, you must be joking, it is every bit the equal of the Nikon F3 and better in my opinion. My R8 has been very reliable, no problems at all, and very comfortable to handle and use. Image wise you will be very happy with the images it cuts.

The only negatives are that you are limited to 2G SD cards and the motor is slow at 2fps. I would like to see someone come up with a mod to increase the motor frame rate. I wonder if you could take a R8/9 Motor Drive and replace the gear train of the DMR with the gear train from the motor drive and get the faster frame rate...

Gene, I suggest you change the firmware to v-1.3 which will support 4Gb SD cards, improve AWB and a few other things as well. I used 4 Gb Transcend SD cards when I used a DMR after changing to v-1.3. I am pleased that you are happy with your DMR and I certainly agree with you about the R8/9. There are very few good R9's available second hand, mine went long before the DMR back and lenses!

Dave,

Thanks, I have firmware 1.3 already, but could not find anything that told me I could use the 4G cards. I will try it with one later this weekend.

As I understand it SDHC cards will not work.

I also have not sold my DMR, and plan to sell it only when a suitable replacement is available. Leica NJ has told a colleague that they intend to support the DMR for at least ten years. Perhaps by then I'll have trouble focussing it quickly & accurately but at 56+ years old it's not a problem.
