Help please with IR

Another filter you might consider trying out is the B&W 403.

This is an UV pass filter that also has a 750 Nm IR capacity. That means another IR effect. It needs a lens that is not UV-protected (all Leica lenses from ca 1950 are!) so you need a Summarit 1.5/50 or one of the cheap Russian Jupiter lenses. These are two different treatments of the same type basic files. Original colour balancing was a simple click on the gravestones, the rest trial and error in Photoshop.( I fear I do not recall the steps, it is nearly two years ago)

A search caused me to resurrect this thread. I would quite like to try IR with my M8 but I have no filters at present. I wonder whether the earlier advice has changed in any significant way? I would welcome suggestions on the best filter to buy. I think I would try IR with my TE 28-35-50mm lens or my 1966 50mm Summicron which has an IR focus marking.

David,

To a large extent it depends on what IR 'look' you want to achieve. If you like faux colour IR then you should get the 092 (R72) 'deep red' filter but if you like snowy white foliage then you should get the 093 'black' filter.:)

Pete,

Many thanks. I favour trying the effect on monochrome initially, so will order the second filter you recommended.

David,

Imho a good choice since that's the one I prefer.:p A few examples of what it produces with M8 and 21/2.8 Kobalux.

Pete, they are fabulous. Thank you. I will source a filter and experiment. A low-cost entry into a new area for me.

You know what? You are absolutely correct! That first shot of the pier did it for me!

What an amazing shot!

I think I will give it a try as well (never tried IR before).

Further to my post above, after a quick Google search I find that the B+W Infra-red 87C 093 filter is difficult to find, generally needs to be ordered specially and costs around £150, depending on size. Does anyone have a more economical source in the UK for what is purely an experimental project?

Pete,

Thank you. The site lists a 55mm 093 filter for £79.99 which is rather better than I saw yesterday. I guess they are all special order but I will try them. It doesn't list 39mm, but a trial on my MATE will give me three options!

NikonGear.com has a forum dedicated to UV and IR, a lot of information regarding filters and lenses etc. can be found there. Not much info on Leica M8 IR there yet, but many other brands and very helpfull specialists!

I have just got my IR filter for my M8 and will compare it to my D200 IR modifyed camera.

If you use a 093 filter the results are in monochrome but with a strong purple tint, so they need to be desaturated. Here's an example...

A fine picture, Steve. I don't see any purple, so presumably you have removed any colour cast. Since IR pictures bear little resemblance to reality, it probably doesn't matter if there is a cast providing it satisfies the author of the picture.

That's correct, here's what it looked like out of the camera...
