plewislambert Posted August 13, 2013 Share #161 Posted August 13, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) What I liked about my M4-P was the lack of menus (after years of digital cameras) and the precision mechanical feel. Initially I had Voigtlander lenses but replaced them with Leica ones subsequently (28mm, 40mm, 90mm). Not found anything like the 15mm Heliar but am managing with a 17mm Tokina some days. Fortunately the M9 can almost be used like a film camera. I find on a half day outing with the M9 when I stop taking pictures and get the train home that I have taken just 37 or 39 pictures! chris_livsey Posted August 15, 2013 Share #162 Posted August 15, 2013 I use my M8 all of the time but also have an M4-P which I don't really use very much. Although the M8 is an easy camera to use it's nowhere near as nice as the M4-P in terms of feel and handling and it kind of makes you wish that digital cameras hadn't been invented and that we were all still using film cameras. I agree completely on the handling etc. My comment is that without the digital demand from interchangeable 2/3rds etc as well would Leica still be in business? If they were would they be designing and selling the new glass? Would Zeiss & Voigtlander have produced all that M glass in the last 10 years or so? I suspect much of the newer Asph stuff would never have arrived, and before someone else says it, yes it can be too contrasty on film, but we have the choice of some modern sharp fast glass to pass the light through to the film I suspect we would not have had. On SLRs how much better, taking away the sensor bit, is the D4 in focus and metering than the F6? Could they have sold us on so many "upgrades" if we had still only film? Sorry to wander OT I promise to go and look at some M4_Ps at my dealers now.

philipus Posted August 21, 2013 Share #164 Posted August 21, 2013 Very nice Josh. I had that lens once and really enjoyed it. Great IQ, handling and looks for the money! To those of you who know - how difficult is it to remove the old covering on, say, one of the meterless Ms?
plewislambert Posted September 14, 2013 Share #165 Posted September 14, 2013 I use my M8 all of the time but also have an M4-P which I don't really use very much. Although the M8 is an easy camera to use it's nowhere near as nice as the M4-P in terms of feel and handling and it kind of makes you wish that digital cameras hadn't been invented and that we were all still using film cameras. I took my M4-P out and was reminded how nice it is. However I have just compared last year's M4-P shots with this year's from my M9 and was surprised to see that flare was much more evident on the M4-P pictures. The lenses used and subjects chosen have not altered much. I use Leica 28mm, 40mm and 90mm lenses supplemented by CV wides on both cameras. Is there something wrong with the M4-P - light-seals, inner reflections? Does the process of development and scanning aggravate flare? The only certainty is there was never any flare from my old chrome 90mm f2.8 Elmarit (that Rockwell slated for flare) perhaps because I always used this 90mm with an oversize hood. de-JTC Posted September 16, 2013 Share #166 Posted September 16, 2013 Very nice Josh. I had that lens once and really enjoyed it. Great IQ, handling and looks for the money! To those of you who know - how difficult is it to remove the old covering on, say, one of the meterless Ms? Hello philipus, I recently changed the leather on my M4-2. The difficulty really depends on the condition of your M, but if you use paint stripper (have a look at the tutorial on cameraleather.com) it is pretty easy. At first I didn't use it and it only came off in little bits and was really annoying. On the whole the process is pretty simple and straight forward - and if you use the paint stripper and a pre cut self adhesive leatherette, it is also fairly easy. A little bit of rubbing alcohol on the adhesive gives you a little more time to position it correctly. Hope that helped.

akitadog Posted January 16, 2014 Share #170 Posted January 16, 2014 Send for a CLA. Lower speeds use different part of the timing mechanism, and need to be cleaned and lubricated. Akitadog, From the WET coast of BC Canada Hey fellow M4-P user, I have a problem with my beauty and could use some advice. When I use my camera at shutter speeds lower that 1/15s, after I click the crank becomes stuck and refusing to wound the film. However, this problem is solved when I turn the shutter speed dial back to 1/60s and it cranks properly again. Haven't had a chance to develop the photos from these situations yet, so I'm not sure what the result looks like. Anyone have any idea what's the problem? Should I just send it in for CLA? Thanks in advance,

pico Posted June 27, 2014 Share #174 Posted June 27, 2014 (edited) It strikes me as interesting that the M4-P is engraved and badged both Leica and Leitz. I can understand why. Did they do that with any other camera? Oh, and it appears that the top engraving, Leitz, occurred with two different font thicknesses. Mine seems thinner than others. Another silly question. If you remove the lens, then look at the floor of the interior body, there is an access plug just to the right. Before I pry it off to look, does anyone know what it's for? . lincoln_m Posted July 14, 2014 Share #176 Posted July 14, 2014 Nice shot with atmos. But why 4x M4-P in black? I can understand 2 one for 35mm one for 50mm but 4 of the same? Do they break often? Lincoln

k_g_wolf ✝ Posted July 17, 2014 Share #178 Posted July 17, 2014 >> Lincoln An M4-P NEVER breaks, but four of them certainly come handy in case you have to use 4 different lenses for an assignment and you are too lazy to change. Best GEORG
