My newly acquired M4-P with Elmarit 21mm f2.8.  The strap was a Christmas present from a close friend.

I bought a second black M4P body recently. These are a few test pictures taken with my 28mm f2.8 Elmarit v3. Copies of darkroom prints.

So many Ms to use, I forgot this for a while.

Almost new = hardly use but I do love this simple and very robust M4-P bought new in 1984 as anniversary model 1913-1983.

Lens came much later, but nice to hold and use this efficient combo...

Been shooting with a MP Typ240 and got my M4-p on Monday finally as my first film M. Viewfinder seems very very slightly hazy but otherwise totally great still to shoot through. Tested shutter speeds all round and seems to fire off well. Love that shutter release sound a lot more than my digital M!
taped up logos and liking the blackout look.
Put 3 rolls through and liking what I see.
here’s a pic of it while I’m taking a coffee break today.

as

Looks like a good buy, I have to say I really like my M4-P.

Each to their own, but I think that taped up Leica's always look as if they have sustained series injuries in an accident.

Finally got my M4-P and am enjoying it. Came with the original box, papers and manual. Curious about the top plate though. I had heard that before serial number 165xxxx or so the top plates were brass and could be identified by the recessed viewfinder window. Mine has the recessed window and serial number is 158xxxx but has a zinc top plate. It was sold around Apr. 1984

How do you know this M4-P has zinc top plate ?

The top plate finishings tell another story (for me ! ).

Looking at the borders and corners in your picture, for me it's brass casting 'finish'.

You are probably seeing the cast from my yellowish desk lamp in this photo.   Under the winding crank where the plastic tab contacts the top plate the black is worn off and I see what looks like bare metal and silver coloring so assuming zinc. Did they possibly use a silver anodize layer under the black anodize and that is what I am seeing?

Thanks

Yes that is another silver layer under the black anodize.

my M4-2 which undoubtly has brass top plate 'whiting' after use a while (not brassing like black paint M )

rubbing with my then large split ring ( later 14312 was a dream from M6! ) original strap

closer view

Thank you, that makes sense then as it seems to have the correct features and time period to be a brass plate. That silver scrape through me off a bit thinking it had to be zinc. I appreciate the info.

I solved the maybe it's a keeper versus maybe it's crap, problem. I bought a brand new M-A!

I did the same, now I have a chrome m-a, chrome m4-p chrome m4 and a bp m4.  Have to let go two of them, pretty hard decision to make.  By the way aside the sound profile and a tidy bit more contrast in the finder I can't see a difference between m4-p and m-a.  OK rewind and advancing aside too lol.

My suggestion,

keep them all 😉.

...

M-A is new comer so may it be the most lasting (if this is important for you), but the best viewfinder of all.

M4-P is more user friendly with angle rewind and plastic articulated wind-on lever (like plain M4) as you stated above

M4 are classic lovely M (maybe because M4 was long ago my first M) and mine Black Paint/Black chrome are so smooth in use.

My last silver chrome M4 needing repair sold recently.
