Leica has made a small investment (by its own account) in replacing the opto-mechanical rangefinder with an EVF. What could be simpler than taking the next step, with another small investment, to replace the mount with a L-mount? For the shorter L-mount registration distance, they would bring the sensor forward in the body, thereby making space for IBIS as well. The higher power demand would be mitigated by a higher capacity battery (as they did for Q and SL by switching from BP-SCL4 to BP-SCL6).

They have conveniently drawn the ire of the RF adherents by the launch of the M-EV1, so the only people who could be upset are those who bought the latter, but would really really like AF - and IBIS.

What not to like?

(Yes, maybe this should be in the L-mount forum - or half way between - but this is where the M evolution excitement is)

I like the concept and it makes sense if we have more compact and light weight L-mount lenses. I wouldn’t want to attach a 24-90 SL to a body with the weight and form factor of the M EV1.

I could see this concept as a good back up body to complement an SL3 and for use with M lenses as well as smaller L primes but the only small L primes were have are the Sigma i-series. They’re not bad lenses by any stretch of the imagination but why would Leica make a new body for Sigma lenses?

I think from Sigma’s perspective, they definitely see this gap in the L-mount and they have proven with with BF that there’s appetite in the market for a premium small form factor L-mount body. Given the market response, I think Sigma will likely iterate in the BF, probably bringing a 60 MP version to market and possibly try to build a BF2.

A Leica version of my Sigma FPL would interest me if it has a built-in EVF. I would not be an M camera though. Why not a Sigma-Leica? We got Pana-Leica cameras for many years after all.

They're not going to go down this road I'd be willing to put a lot of money on it.

There's a reason they didn't continue with the CL and TL range.

They've put a lot of investment in the M EV1 and there'll be iterations of it.

M EV1 will form part of the M family.

SL and -S will be the L family.

Q fixed lens.

I think there are limits to how many different lines a small company can have running at the same time.

And although I'm no expert, I think it would be more difficult than it seems to cram extra technology into a 70-year-old camera body. It would definitely be easier to start with the technical aspects and build a new body around it (something like a smaller SL).

You suggesting that they destroy what they have of their small sales of SL line?
Come on, they flopped an easy win of Leica SL3S and now you suggest what?

There will be no M with L, they will continue to milk their product lines

Your 20-20 marketing foresight is invaluable.

But perhaps just lighten up a bit?

You are just living in a world of fantasy.
It's not MY marketing foresight

https://petapixel.com/2024/03/22/leica-selling-l-mount-cameras-is-tougher-than-selling-a-q-or-an-m/

SL3/SL3S shows less sales than their any other product line, why they would kill it off even more by introducing M with L mount?
Just enlighten me

An L-mount camera with a rangefinder-style EVF made by either Sigma, Panasonic, or Leica would be great.

I predict this will be the next hot topic now that the EV1 is out. 🔮

Leica has a choice: let Sigma and Panasonic cannibalise their SL or M series or do it themselves (to adapt a quote of Steve Jobs).

There's also a DJI camera rumored to be on the way.

Oh yes! A Leica Q with an L mount! A challenger to the Sony A7CR and A7CII.
A 60 MP version (QL) and a 24 MP version (QL-S).:o
However, I still don't know if the M mount wide-angle lenses (24mm, 21mm, WATE) perform as good on an SL3 as they do on an M11 / M1-EV?
