Leica today announced a firmware update (version 2.5.1) for all Leica M11 family models:

The changes to the new firmware are primarily intended to comply with an EU directive on data security:

Fully compliant with Article 3.3 of the EU Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU)

  • Improved WLAN security: When the camera is reset, a new randomly generated WLAN password is automatically assigned.
  • First-run protection: To prevent unauthorized connections, PTP pairing is only enabled after completing the connection setup wizard.
  • Secure formatting: The internal memory can now be completely overwritten (secure erase).

In addition, a bug has been fixed:

Resolved: A bug that caused low battery warnings even when the battery was adequately charged was fixed.

This PDF document explains the changes and the update process via the FOTOS app and SD card in detail.

Loading as I type. I always think there are fixes they don’t mention that encourages me to update even if not particularly interested in headline fixes.

Hi,

I have downloaded and installed the new firmware. I was so fast that I did not check which version I had in camera.

If I look at my Downloads folder, the previous one I downloaded was the 2.2.1, back in February, did I miss anything in-between? I have M11M

Thanks.

Yes, there have been many versions, at least one publically released.  I've loaded and quickly checked this new version in M11, M11-D and M11-P, and I see there is an M11-M owner who is up to date as well.  No new problems reported and some old ones gone.

Mmm, is it me or are there different internal format options introduced (Fast, Secure) ?

Or didn't I pay attention to the previous versions ... 🙄

I guess there was never any options other than slowly and insecurely format internal memory? :)

Is it like with Nikon that the latest firmware contains all the previous ones?

Thx

I'm hoping that's the case. I haven't updated in about 2 years. Considering doing so now that the camera is freezing every once in a while. Silver M11, purchased new a week after release.

Time for secure format on 64GB SSD: 8'40'' here (regular M11).

Seems about right.  I'm 4 or 5 minutes into it:

According to the release notes (I just read it), it could take up to 75 minutes ...

Maybe 15 minutes for M11 (64) and 75 minutes for M11P and M11M (250).  I have M11M but never used the internal drive, so I’ll leave well alone.
