It’s useful but not essential.

It would be an impressive feat of engineering to cram it into an M body I think.

That is the one restriction that Leica have that most other companies don’t: Leica cannot change the M basic form. Compare Hasselblad and the X2D: It’s a fabulous camera   to use because they could design it from scratch without trying to keep it within the accepted dimensions of a historic camera.

The available solution - to mount M glass on an SL - is available for those who want it.

Yes and no.

The M without IBIS works fine and is an excellent photographic tool, much better than some other cameras with IBIS.

However, adding IBIS would allow longer exposures in some instances, which would be beneficial in low light. When I plan to shoot Sensorio at night, I cannot use the M11.

Obstacle to slow shutter speeds here. I don't use my M11 for speeds slower than 1/(2f)s. I kept my M240 for that. Not a huge issue but the M11 is the first M since the 50s to suffer from that. It has excuses but i won't buy the M12 or a possible EVF-M if Leica doesn't fix this issue with IBIS or otherwise. YMMV.

Yes, for me it's a downside. I have to use much faster shutter speeds to ensure I get sharp images.

Image stabilisation when you have good  enough high iso, at the price of bigger body with higher energy consumption  doesn’t make any sense to me. Just keep 1/2 focal length as minimum shutter speed and compensate with film speed.

Main reason for me to stick with leica is that it gives you access to essential controls to make a picture, no extra programs, countless buttons, maze-like menus. You may call me a luddite radical but I believe there’s room for some more cuts in D line

The minimum handholding shutter speed depends on the photographer. If I want sharpness at the pixel level, I use 1/2f for 24MP and 1/4f for 60MP.
