Quite so.

There have been some hefty increases over the past few years. This Apo 35 Summicron has increased almost NZ$2,000 in 2 years or so.

Unless something’s has chsnged NZ is the king of tariffs and import duties. For year importer we’re protected by law!

Sorry but the 5th is "Tag des Bilderrahmens – International Picture Frame Day" - not the M-Day  ... and the 6th is Keine-Hausaufgaben-Tag – No Homework Day ... so Leica has not done their homework ... but the 8th is the Tag des Verpackungsdesigns – National Packaging Design Day - so we are closer. I bet it's the 9th: Tag des Orgasmus – der brasilianische Día del Orgasmo :)

True. I was surprised to learn some years ago that there’s a 10% tariff on all imported footwear.

Which would be about 99.9999% of footwear on sale here!

Are there any codes of new lenses your camera can't detect?

None that I own. But I don’t think my M10-D, running on the latest firmware update, could recognize the 6-bit code of a lens introduced after that firmware update. For example, the new 50mm Summilux non-asph.

This is an annoying issue.

I don’t expect any upgrades to my cameras, except to fix bugs (which, frankly, shouldn’t be there), but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect lens codes to be kept up to date. Otherwise, the whole system seems pointless!

My Monochrom, doesn’t recognise a number of my lenses (specifically, the 35 & 50 APO Summicrons).  Surely it’s not too much to ask for a patch to be issued for all digital M cameras when a new lens is released.

Do we know the code for the new 50mm Summilux non-asph? Aren't they reusing the code of the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 (II)?

Seems to be 000101, same as the v2/v3:

I completely understand!

But this is the Deal we make with the Devil by using camera-shaped computers for photography. They simply are not a "camera for a lifetime" 1954 M3.

I wonder if Leica even knows in which drawer they stashed their "latest" M-CCD firmware master file (in 2017). And whether they still have the in-house software to recompile firmware for an M9/Monochrom, even if new lens data is added.

And where does it end? Some M9s will likely still be functional in 2040, if they still have functioning batteries (the far side of the expected-lifetime bell-curve, but some will reach the far side). But should new-lens support extend until then?

Can you get 2025 software to run on a 2009 desktop computer, without jumping through hoops? Or run 2009 Photoshop on a 2025 computer?

I figure firmware counts as "spare parts" - we get 10 years support after production ends.

I think Stefan Daniel said, when someone wanted some similar upgrade for the M8, that "the M8 is a 'finished' product." And Leica fired a CEO for (among other reasons) suggesting that the M8 could be eternally upgradeable.

All true, Andy … except that … when the M8 was introduced, I’m sure Peter Karbe will have mentioned to Stefan Daniel that he might design a new lens or two with new 6 bit codes.  Some one might have said, let’s design the software with a common protocol for future camera software to ensure that new lens codes can be added for as long as the camera is in use.  Rather than Leica announcing that your camera “is finished.”

I might be in a minority here, but if I spend Leica money on a new camera, I’m going to continue using it far longer than that.

[fill in bit about digital cameras being computers, I don’t understand, unrealistic … etc etc]

That’s why it’s good practice to separate parameters from the software itself. ‘Hardcoding’ values directly into the software is a bad idea in software development. By keeping lens parameters and their 6-bit codes separate, it becomes much easier to update older, stable software with support for new lenses.

Would be the Leica spirit, as i understand it, to update firmwares of discontinued cameras but i'm not sure if there a legal grounds for that.

If they could just allow custom lens naming in the camera menu, the problem would be solved. But I suspect they're not too happy that it would also open up for third-party lenses.

I can't manage those dates, but when I built my current computer in 2014, the machine was able to run a 1998 version of Photoshop.
