Leica Miami best selling list does not include M cameras up to #4 on list

I would bet that the M (and lenses for it) comes in at #1 on the USED list. Thing about M's, except for a few with seemingly endless amounts of disposable income, they are often seen as a lifetime purchase and not something to switch out every year (or three). No need to, as the underlying concept doesn't change, only a few bells and whistles. The Q seems to be more of the Sony model (and for those coming from the likes of Sony), as well it is bought by many as a 'backup' or an alternative for those who already have M's. Same with the SL line.

Of course the M is least purchased. It too expensive. A Q is a far easier catch for anyone compared to an M.  There will come a point where the everyday photographer who is selling their left kidney to pay for an M will suddenly call enough is enough. Leica needs to give up the prestige status and start targeting the everyday Joe with the everyday spend limit.

Does anybody know if the mentioned list counts sold units, sold system components or total value? It could be misleading to compare eg. Q camera sales with M camera sales while omitting the sold lenses.

The list is items SOLD.

Leica Rumors has the complete Leica Miami list including lenses, the first of which are the APO M 35 and 50, but I was surprised to see how many L lenses were in the top 10 of lenses sold..

I for the moment believe enough is enough and will find it ever more difficult to justify any more M body purchases.

Why? they are doing just fine in their niche. There is no reason for them to enter the shark-infested waters of the mid-range market.

Keep in mind there are users here who have an M11, P, M, and D, and perhaps even a Q or SL of some sort, yet don't own a single Alpa or Phase One. How very proletarian of them...

For my money, a brand new Q is the overpriced one. Esp when one wants to change lenses....

And there are plenty of people around with plenty of spare cash. Try and go skiing a fortnight with the family in a hotel @ 250€ a person a night ( excluding wine 😉) and ski passes @ 600€ a person and then in October a Safari in tourist camps at prices ranging from 500 to 5000 € ppn ( where I don’t go BTW); you’ll find them solidly booked out. A Leica M is peanuts in comparison.

I don't understand why everyone in this thread insists on making analogies between different brands when Leica is one brand.

These are usually bad analogies anyway, I mean maybe not quite as bad as when guitar players do it, but like, at least let's pick two cars owned by the same company. I really don't think it's that tough.

Let me pick up a better analogy with same brand then.

A white gold with meteorite dial GMT II Rolex sells for about $70-80k.

A plain vanilla no-date submariner stainless steel sells for about $10k.

I think the white gold GMT is better than SS submariner. But which one sells most?

For my money I see M APO lenses are going for more than the Q without a $10k camera body.

The Cybertruck is the most glaring example of people having more cash than sense... (only in the US, of course, as it's not actually MOT worthy just about anywhere else).

Definitely more people shoot with Q and probably SL compared to the more analog approach of M in rangefinder applications, sluggish evf if applied and the list is on and on

Look at how people start to wishing the next M generation is an SL in an M body

all makes sense

This discussion is fascinating to me. And I do love all the watch analogies! I am curious, for anyone who had thoughts before looking at our "best sellers of 2024" list, what would you have expected to be the top selling camera and lens?

Back in I think it was in 1988 or thereabouts the camera which was #1 on the list was a glorified point and shoot camera. I won't name names but compared to nearly any camera it was junk. popular it was as a photography magazine declared it king of the hill for best value. they sold a zillion of the things. I know a society wedding photographer who was influenced by this and used one instead of his 'blad for a shoot ( I think he had to ultimately fly all the guest back in town and reshoot) but the point was "most sold" its meaningless in nearly every way unless sales are a popularity contest! I love my M11. Everything about it makes me enjoy using it. Are there times using it I don't enjoy? well yes. I can't focus well enough to take pictures of my grandkids zipping around so I added an Sl2 (on sale and amazing deal) to my camera stable and it serves the purpose admirably. Did most sold in any way influence me in my purchase? Not for a minute! Will Leica ever make the global most sold list? probably not but why do we care. And guys if you feel like you have too many oysters I can pay shipping although I prefer the Omega "America cup version" .. I see thoseLeica watches look nice to.

Y'all have fun with it. I am old and need my nap now !

Rolexes, eh? Honestly... (grin)

Just as with the Leica, there might be people who select a Rolex on the basis of the impression it will make on others. It's there to tell time, you say? Please.

Not for me.

When the opportunity came, quite a number of years ago, to select a "keeper" watch, I knew, immediately, there was only one choice for me, and it was an easy one.

The original Omega Speedmaster Professional.

The watch selected by NASA for use in space. Manual wind. Devoid of bling. Plain old stainless steel. It's the watch that was worn on the Moon. More significantly in my mind, it's the watch used on Apollo 13 to time the course correction burn on their return trip when their computers were down.

I've worn it for years. I like that it has no battery (you gotta wind it up), that it's not a fashion statement, just a plain example of exemplary design and engineering, possessing an integrity sufficient to have separated it from the ordinary - for reasons other than its materials, or its prestige as a piece of jewelry. Just an honest, and beautiful, functional machine.

Mine has been noticed only once or twice in all those many years. Most folks wouldn't ever see it as anything particularly showy or intended for display. It was kind of embarrassing when it was noticed, because folks might have thought that was my intention. It was not.

I wear it as a tribute. I wear it because it has meaning - to me. There are not that many space-rated items available to the general public. I'm of an age that was perfect for following the Space Race growing up. Mercury, Gemini, Apollo. I followed them they way the other kids followed baseball.

Anyway, I'm pretty certain it's not the top seller for Omega. And just like the Ostrich Skin covered Leicas (and the like), Omega had brought out various "special editions" over the years, specifically for people who do want it to be seen as jewelry, who want it to be noticed, who buy it thinking about what they hope others will think and say about it. OK for them, but not my groove, y'know?

For me the manual Leicas are about enduring design and practical value for their stated and intended purpose as robust platforms for a particular approach to image making that they both embody and exemplify.

If they get noticed as I use them, I hope it's by someone who understands, who feels the same way, rather than someone who goes, "Ooooooooh! That's so cool! I had to settle for the Unborn Fur Seal Edition because the Wooly Mammoth clashed with my Rolex Platinum Cosmograph!"
