So we've heard why you love and hate the Leica M, at length.  Now, in the quiet that descends over Christmas, I had a chance to listen to what Leica M has to say about that.

First, it said,

Don't ask, what Leica M can do for you.
Ask, what you can do for Leica M.

It loves you because you love rangefinders.  It loves you because you prefer simplicity.  It comes from wisdom and hard-earned disdain for complexity.

Leica M loves you because you focus on the essence of the art.

Leica M loves you because you keep the M lenses for decades and see what else they can do with every new generation of technology.

It loves you because you take it with you everywhere.  As @Overgaard famously keeps saying, always wear a camera!

It loves you because you keep buying it new straps and comfortable bags, as you should.

But, also, I'm sorry to say, your Leica M hates you sometimes.

Because you keep upgrading it for GASeous reasons.

Because you keep counting megapixels instead of focusing on the picture in front of you, quite literally.

It hates those of you who keep mentioning something called EVF or even weirder, a "tilting screen."  WTF is that, asks Herr Barnack?

It hates you when you leave it out of sight on a train or a plane, especially in Italy.  Never do that.

It hates you when you come here and ask why is it so expensive.  Because it's worth it.

But overall it loves you!  And it wishes you Happy Holidays.

The Leica M you're describing looks like my M3 but hardly my M11, although even my M3 did not dislike accessory finders. Even HCB did use one with his Barnack in the thirties and his M3 in the fifties. Now EVFs are nothing but modern accessory finders with reflex cababilities.

You can do that in Tokyo and he'll actually like that

Leica has been making Visoflexes for their optical viewfinder cameras since the PLOOT from 1935.

I believe my Leica M hates me when I pick up the Olympus E-M1 Mk III for Zoom, Tele or Flash photography. And I further assume, the very same Leica M is at least jealous when I pick up the Leica Q2. And at the same time the M Summiluxes are screaming against the fake Summilux on that Q2.

But when I wake up, I see this objects made of metal, glass and plastics resting silently on the shelf and I realize that it was just a nightmare....

I hate my digital M every time I frantically press the shutter button and nothing happens, because it's gone to sleep and I miss an award-winning master shot.

The camera hates me because it wasn't its fault, it was the designers' fault, but mostly my fault because I should have remembered to wake it up before the exciting stuff happened.

But mostly we love each other, for all the good times we have together.

I’ve started to increase the sleep interval to 10 min and it generally helps.  After the original X1D, Leica startup times are a breeze!:)

It hates you, because you expect it to work flawlessly, like most other cameras even at a fraction of it's price.

It loves you, because thanks to being so expensive and good looking, you'll forgive all it's faults, and simply enjoy your membership to 'the club'.

Wait - are we talking about M cameras or trophy wives??
