It's all quite subjective, especially when you prefer the misinterpretation of colors of the M240 to those of Sony (which also differ from model to model and sensor to sensor but at least did never had that strange magenta tint of the M11 or the extreme orange shift of the M240). Advertisement Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 Hi 3D-Kraft.com, Take a look here Goodbye, M11!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted December 28, 2024 Share #162 Posted December 28, 2024 I kept my M240 for backup to my M11. None suffers from the so-called magenta cast but reds tend to saturate on the M11 and to clip on the M240. Both are easy to adjust in post if needed so i wouldn't call this an issue.

To paraphrase: "It's the lenses, stupid...." Hmmm. I thought the same originally, but I now have 3 M11s. The dynamic range of the sensor, the high resolution, and more capable metering have won me over. Yes, I still get great pics from my M10s, but if stranded on a desert island it's the M11 for me. I'd also mention that on my first M11 I had a couple of lockup issues. What I found over time is older memory cards seem to be one cause. Since using current memory cards, I have had no further issues (and of course keep the firmware up to date). I don't see how they will greatly improve upon the M11. Maybe some newfangled mix of optical and EVF overlay. All that said, I do like the look of the M9 files. My only issue with my M9 now is I can't find new batteries anymore. Which seems to be an issue for all discontinued Leicas these days. Even the M240 is hard to find batteries for now.

After shooting lots of kids videos with the M246, this is a perfect companion. The battery life exceeds M11s. The gorilla glass screen is bright and everything feels just right. The video makes it an important option for family vacations. So it worked out very well. For the main M, enjoying the trusted M10-R again. I always had a nagging feeling that M11 colors are too sharp and Sony-like, and M10-R assuages that with the expected, classic Leica look. Better put that 240 on a gimbal lest your audience feel like they're watching the D-Day scene from Saving Private Ryan.

setuporg Posted December 29, 2024 Author Share #170 Posted December 29, 2024 I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the M240/246 videos, made special by the Leica lenses. The jerkiness must be controlled, of course, but if you can shoot at 1/15 you know how to keep a Leica steady anyways. I’ve found a blog of a videographer who put a Leica M240 on a gimbal for a job, for the unique look. The colors of the M240 are indeed superb and were familiar to me since using the Edition 60 for a long time. It is a strange and new feeling to see the color photos on a screen where previously there has been none! Overall I am grateful to the erstwhile M11s for reconnecting me with the Leica heritage. As some of you may remember, I got a last new old M9-P from Leica waiting for an M11, and now bookended it with an M-P. This adds a pleasure of rereading @Overgaard’s reviews going back in time and appreciating various features in context. There are also blogs of folks who are rediscovering these cameras anew. What differentiates Leica from any other digital camera lines is that a new thing does not completely subsume the old one. The old ones often become special in comparison, featuring the CCD sensor looks or rangefinder video.

One problem was charging them, which turned out to be a problem with one of the original Monochrom chargers. I’ve obtained a dual USB-C charger with LED status from Amazon for a whopping $11 that quickly charged all the batteries and M9 shows them full! The M240 batteries can also be had from Varta and one of mine is even Korean. They last forever still and seem OK after a year’s pause.

I missed your Saving Private Ryan mention which brought up other D day mentions. Edited December 31, 2024 by algrove
