Leica has released an update(v 1.1.9) for the Leica SL3 that should solve the problem described here.

You can install the update via the Leica FOTOS app or download it here from the  Leica SL3 download page.

The changes in the new Leica SL3 firmware version in detail

Error correction

  • Sporadic error that resulted in unnoticed overwriting of existing recordings if the camera was not properly turned off beforehand (e.g., during battery replacement in standby mode or after an unexpected software interruption).
  • Correction of errors in the firmware.

Improvement

  • Optimization of the Leica FOTOS connection.

Wondering what the second bullet point  “Correction of errors in the firmware” could be.

All those errors, not yet encountered by the Leica Forum, that could have created pages of threads in a few months time.
Now avoided.
But we will never know.

Do you need to do a camera reset after install? I have saved my Profile so no problem (I hope).

UPDATE: I'll answer my own question. No reset needed, but language, date and time will need to be reset.

Hopefully no functionality removed, like the joystick magnification on SL2-S firmware 6.0

Ahhh well done Leica, thank you!

What are all they all going to moan about now though

Everybody moves on to the M11 board now. The sky must not stop falling! 😇

P.S.: Thank you to everyone who got involved with Leica to report and solve the issue!

I can also confirm numbering resets to 1. I thought there was a menu in LeicaFotos that allowed you to sync date and time when paired but I can't find that.

I installed the firmware reset the old way.  No change in numbering, which continued.

The recent firmware update is somehow been disappointing. While it claims to have fixed an error that I never encountered, therefore I am unable to verify this. Moreover, the other errors still seem to be present at first glance. Additionally, there is still no appreciated information provided e.g. on speeds of the CFe slot. It makes me wonder if Leica is truly committed to developing a professional-grade camera.

I actually thought they might include a couple of additional things in this firmware update because Canon had done that a couple of times; a faulty firmware fixed a couple of days later with the addition of new features. I almost thought of it as an apology for the first botched firmware. In this case I suspect Leica placed on hold whatever firmware update they had cooking and rushed this single fix firmware out. I have no doubt improvements are coming.

Well done Leica!

I’ve had this for a few days now and I’ve done the most terrible things with dying batteries and inexcusable power off, and I have completely failed to break it (which I managed easily before).

hopefully this is end of story!
