While shooting with the M11 today (documentary shots of some work we're having done around the house) I was exercising the new-to-me Tri-Elmar MATE, merrily selecting different focal lengths for the various shots, shooting away, and not really paying any attention to the camera body....

And then, after taking a shot, I shut it off. And the light was still on. And I thought, "Oh Schmidt..."

And then I saw a message on the rear screen, to the effect of, "file saving in progress" or something similar. It was there for a moment or two, then disappeared... and the red light went out.

Hmm! So I turned the camera back on, and it was as if nothing had happened. I didn't try turning it back on while the red light was on. It all happened so fast I didn't really process it while it was happening.

In fact, nothing did happen, except that the body let me know in writing that it was still busy for a moment, a time frame corresponding to the red light being on while the system finished its chores.

I don't recall seeing behavior like this before. Has it always worked this way? Could be.

Anyway, it's working beautifully for me.

that is when i could freeze the camera - turning off immediately after taking a picture, so they fixed it by completing all the processes, which is good :)

I came across this bug today: I shot about 30 frames, pulled out the card and imported the frames to the Mac. Everything went perfectly. I inserted the card back into the camera. But before the next walk, I decided to look at the footage that remained on the memory card. All frames were available for viewing, but when flipping from the last frame to the first, I received the message “File unreadable”. The next swipe led to the first frame and so on in a circle. After the last frame this message always popped up. I'm guessing this is a consequence of the Mac creating service files on the memory card. However, this means that Leica still works with memory cards incorrectly and only in its own way. FORMAT the card after importing it into the Mac, as it is difficult to predict what the consequences of using a non-empty memory card will be for the second and subsequent sessions if you inserted the memory card into the Mac between sessions.

It's clear that Leica still has some work to do to make the M11 flawless

It's a question I've wondered about but never asked...

I, who's had very, very little trouble with freezes, am using Windows.

Could there be any correlation between the incidence of freezing and the computer operating system people are employing?

Lord, I hope not. The last thing this troubled world needs is a revival of the Windows/Mac debate!

This is so easily prevented by locking the card before inserting Ito the computer.

If someone has an old unnecessary Mac lying around, please send it to Wetzlar so that they can sort out its file system and M11 will stop counting system files as its frames😂

I remember seeing this before on FW2.0.2. Look for hidden file(s) on the SD card in the DCIM/100LEICA folder, that have a filename starting with a "." dot. (You can toggle between hidden file view in Finder by pressing shift-command-"."). Oh and don't delete such files in the play menu on the camera...

I you don't see such files, it might be needed to try to view them with the Terminal app... That is a little trickier...

This can be easily avoided if Leica writes the correct firmware someday. I already avoid unnecessary on/off switching of the M11, I avoid burst shooting, I avoid AWB, I avoid repeated sessions on the memory card. Too many avoidances for one camera

I hear you. Believe me, I do. but... until Leica gets its act together on this one, surely we can flip the little thingy on the side of the sd card before we stick it in the Mac.

How easy is that with a Sony Tough or Delkin Black SD card without write protection switch??

Avoid using cards that don't work at all with the M11, only use ones that mostly work😀

The Delkin Black 64GB works fine in my M11-P. I am using two of them all the time...

Now that's interesting. This very afternoon,  I used SD Card Formatter to do a fresh overwrite format of the card that I filled up in my M11 with the pictures of the construction work we're having done.

SD Card Formatter complained when I hit, "Go" at first, saying that my card was write protected. Huh?

I pulled the card out, double checked the position of the Write Lock slider by clicking it once to Write Protect, and then once again, back again to Writable.

After that, it formatted as normal.

Why did SD Card Formatter say my card was Write Protected when the slider was already set to Writable?

Now that I think of it, it's done this before...

What kind of internal OS utility files do Windows, Mac, and Linux write to a Card when reading it?

Couldn't be easier for me. My Sony Tough is my favorite card on M11 and i use only Macs.

Ok - bang goes that theory, probably. Please disregard what I said.

It was what the technical writers call a "WAG" (WildAss Guess)...

Interesting indeed, If it's the same card, may be the switch is buggy? Did it feel loose?

You mean switching write protection? Never done that in 20+ years of digital photo with any camera on any Mac so far.

Question: what should I do after inserting the card into the Mac? Is it necessary to format? There is no chance to continue shooting with this memory card?
