Installed via app, lucky for me all good, went out for a shoot and no problem, all connection good, all images good, so far nothing to complain whatsoever (and I have used live view more that usually, which before was one of the issues). Today may go during daytime so will test in hot conditions too but I have a sense this is the one, G

Would like to hear feedback about firmware update to 2.1.1 from those owners previously reported experience freeze and files corruption.

Good news w.r.t.  file corruption:

One big difference between 2.0.2 and 2.1.1: 2.1.1 does not corrupt the data structures on the SD card anymore (by always writing at the cluster location where a previous write ended). It means that one can now *again* freely exchange non-empty SD cards (so cards with picture files on them)  and keep shooting on them, and such non-empty SD cards  can be put back in camera for further shooting after they were in a PC or Mac for ingesting.

There is no need to format a non-empty SD card in camera before starting taking pictures on it anymore. The M11 behaves *again* as it should.

Most, if not all freezes I encountered myself with FW2.0.2 seemed to be related to this problem.

Just updated the firmware in my M11. It took two or three minutes, then I heard the distinctive click of the shutter/switch off sound, and the screen went blank. According to the manual, it should restart at this point, but nothing else happened.

Camera was still on, and awoke when I pressed the Menu button. Scrolled through the settings, everything was as before, the way I'd set up the buttons was unchanged, and the camera information confirms it's firmware 2.1.1.

Even the date and time were correct, although the manual says those would need to be reset after a firmware upgrade. The compensation dial still requires a press in to operate, just as before. Everything seems to be working fine. Does all that sound about right, or should I manually restart the camera, just to be sure?

I never had such need before so no change happened in my experience but i may be misunderstanding what you say.

same here (date and time). Updated my two M11s yesterday. All is good - so far.

Never understood that, but I suppose it's a generational thing. I wonder which is the main culprit, the lack of SD card slots in computers or the fact that consumers don't demand such slots.

If i had to guess I would say cost is the biggest factor. Apart from photographers who uses the SD card slot in the computer so manufacturers save a buck on an extremely poorly designed interface.

Of course. It would be stupid to do it on the fly. But if it updates from a file that is corrupted during transfer?  It probably even does a checksum but that won’t catch every error.

And the crappy oxidized interface on your SD card is somehow better? Nothing is foolproof but checksum is pretty reliable!

Still freezing

Today I upgraded from v2.0.1 to v.2.1.1 (skipped any versions in between) from an SD card, hoping that “my” kind of freezing which I experienced a lot with earlier firmware versions including v2.0.1 (and which I describe in some detail below) should be gone – but unfortunately, it isn’t gone, see below.

First unusual observation:  After the upgrade, I re-inserted the SD card I had used before which has >300 photos on it (i.e., >600 files, pairs of JPG and DNG).  Pressing “Play” then first only showed one photo which happens to be on the internal storage; I did not find any way to “Play” any of the >300 photos on the SD card.  Taking a photo (with my usual setting that new photos are stored on the SD card, if one is inserted) and pressing “Play” did show the new photo, and then it was also possible to go back to the “old” >300 photos again.  I can’t remember having observed this behavior before after earlier firmware upgrades.  This is not really a problem, just strange.

But now the really frustrating part:  I went for a short walk with the M11 to try it.  The power setting is as the factory setting, i.e., after 2 minutes of being idle the M11 goes into stand-by mode and it should wake up when the shutter release button is touched.  This works most of the time as it should, but occasionally I experience the following behavior:  The M11 is in stand-by, I touch the shutter button, the shutter opens (I hear that sound of the opening shutter), the frame lines are illuminated in full brightness (i.e. not adjusted to the ambient light as normally), but the red characters for either the ISO setting or “Auto” or the light scale (which normally do appear after a few seconds) do not appear and the M11 is completely frozen, i.e. does not react to any button being pressed or to the power switch.  I switch off the power (the frame lines are still illuminated in full brightness), I take off the battery (the frame lines go off of course), I slowly count to “7”, I re-insert the battery, sometimes the frame lines immediately reappear in full brightness in spite of the power switch on “Off”, and the M11 is still frozen.  Sometimes it can be “unfrozen” by switching the power switch on and off a few times, but often I have to remove the battery once again, slowly count to 20, reinsert it, and eventually the M11 works again.  As I mentioned above, I did experience this type of freezing quite a lot with earlier versions, and today with the new v.2.1.1 I had this freezing after the M11 did wake up about 12 times without problems.

Anybody else experiencing this kind of freezing?  …any known fixes?  Thanks!

Chris, there may be some other edge conditions if the SD card is already in a corrupted state from the previous firmware. I would try to start with a freshly formatted card to start with, then conduct your testing again. My day job is a software developer and I know how hard (to nearly impossible) dealing with every edge case can wind up being. My expectation is that if the camera runs into something that is completely unexpected (like issues with the SD card being in a broken state), I'm not really sure what I would do in that case. I know I wouldn't want to try to "fix" things, because unless I've thoroughly tested "fixing" things, I would be more worried about breaking things further. Sometimes, the best thing that can be done is to stop to not make things any worse.

Personally, I've run into the freezing problem before, but since I've installed the update (in my limited testing thus far), I've not had any issues.

Thank you for your answer.  I should explain in more detail how I perform those firmware upgrades:  I remove the SD card which I used to take pictures (today, the one with the >300 photos on it), I insert another SD card which I use exclusively for firmware updates, I format this SD card freshly in the M11 (so I do use a freshly formatted card for every firmware upgrade, as you recommend), I remove this SD card, insert it into my Windows computer and copy the firmware onto it.  Then I insert this dedicated SD card into the M11 and perform the upgrade.  After having seen the message on the screen that the upgrade is finished and the M11 switched itself off, I remove this "firmware-SD-card" and insert the "photos-SD-card" again and switch the M11 on.  Both SD cards never gave me any indication of being corrupted or in a broken state; they are among the ones which have been recommended to me and sold to me by my Leica dealer (i.e., not cheap "no-name" SD cards, but the ones recommended by Leica).

I also do some software development sometimes during my day job, so yes, I also can imagine how hard it is to find and fix all these cases, and to worry about breaking something else when fixing some issue...  ...however, I didn't experience any freezing with the M9 (OK, that's quite a different concept, with the shutter only opening during exposure), but also with the SL 2 which might be more similar to the M11 regarding the fact that the shutter is open when the camera is active, not in stand-by, I have never had this kind of freezing after the SL 2 was in stand-by -- and for the SL 2 I let it go into stand-by already after 10 seconds (the other advantage of the SL 2 is the fact, that it takes much less time to wake up from stand-by than the M11; in certain situations it feels like it takes ages until the M11 wakes up from stand-by 🙂 ).

See the post before yours?

Thank you for your reply.  Please see my reply to Vec:  I did remove the firmware SD card after the upgrade was finished and re-inserted the photo SD card before switching on the M11 again, so I think I did follow these instructions...?

Also, I did experience this kind of freezing even with the original firmware with which I got my M11, i.e., before I performed any firmware upgrade myself, hence I assume that this freezing might not be related to me doing something wrong in the upgrade procedure...?

Rockyocean,

Might I suggest you remove the SD card and the battery at the same time, wait a moment and then replace both......that worked for me yesterday when I had a similar lockup after installing the new update......only happened once and is working fine now.

I don't have a M11, so have no particular knowledge or experience other than having followed the M11 saga. In your place though, and reading those instructions, I would not have reinserted a card used under the previous firmware. I would have only have used a reformatted card.

But then I never leave and reuse cards with images on them - I download to my PC or laptop daily, and, after backing up (to give me two new copies of my images), format the card before reusing it. SD cards are cheap and convenient means of temporarily storing images after shooting, but I don't trust them for longer term storage than I absolutely have to.

This comment is not about the freezing but about viewing images from the SD or internal memory. If you turn the thumb wheel to the left in play mode you will get a screen that allows you to select which memory you want to read from. Hope that helps on that issue.

Launched the Fotos app and the new firmware isn't available for me.  The Fotos app shows my camera having version 2.0.2

Any thoughts as to why it's not available? I'm in the USA, Northern CA, assuming that makes any difference.

****EDIT, looks like I had to close and reopen FOTOS a few time in order for the new firmware available to pop up.  Updating now.

I updated yesterday via Fotos app and the update went without a problem. Unfortunately, today, while taking photos of an event (where I took a total of about 600 photos), I repeatedly experienced a freezes, which I have not yet encountered. When shooting in single mode, the shutter stopped responding several times. The LED glowed red and nothing helped other than removing and reinserting the battery. It was directly during shooting, no LCD screen used, no photo playback etc.
I am all the more sorry because in the previous version of the fw I encountered problems only very rarely and when I did, they were related to photo playback and did not affect the actual shooting. This problem limits me directly when taking pictures and is very unpleasant for me.
I want to try resetting the camera to factory settings, but I don't expect it to have any effect :(
