That's a great point and one of the reasons I went with an Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH, the size and weight appealed to me for travel and for general all around shooting.  Coming from an a7rv with an assortment of expensive and large GM lenses, which I still have, it was important for me to go in the other direction.  I also looked through my photos and realized that I very rarely shot wide open so the 2.8 will be more then enough for me especially for street photography.

For me the ideal lens on an M is the Elmar 50/2.8 M collapsible. Except for a Monochrom, there it is the Nokton 50 1.5 ii.

I have this un-curable issue which cost a lot of money, because I always HAVE to get to the top without hovering around. (but shockingly, It saves me money compared to if I have to take steps to learn things)

Got lux 50mm and have lux 35mm coming. Thinking about getting Cron 28mm in case I go for trips later this year.

I am a super novice just want to venture new hobby. Hope to learn a lot from you pros

cheers

I just checked M10 prices today. Pleasing for not a pro 😁

One learning hint. Any digital camera is the king until it is current generation.

Hold to lenses you have ordered. But get ready to betray the king soon.

You know, once XII is out, XI is not a king anymore.

mostly streetphoto and I frequently drive out to the west desert area just to drive.
i wasn't really a photo guy. Have had Canon before and this is my 2nd digital camera and trying to learn deeper

That’s a great combo. I bought the M11 initially to use for my landscape photography - easier than most modern cameras to fit in a backpacking when hiking because of the small lenses. Since getting it, I find myself doing more and more street and I suspect that’s because the camera is so well suited to it. Enjoy!

I have been a Leica SL user including the original SL, SL2 and SL2-S using both M and SL glass, since buying the M11 and then being upgraded to M11-P (due to issues with M11) here are my stats on lens use on the M11/M11-P.

(Stats from 2023 and YTD 2024) 3051 Total Pictures, of which 2360 on the 35 Summilux, 492 on 50 Summilux.  132 on 90 Summicron, 68 on 21 Super-Elmar

(Stats from 2022) 1777 Total Pictures, of which 1224 on the 35 Summilux, 522 on 50 Summilux.  on 90 Summicron, 25 on 21 Super-Elmar

I own a 28 as well, but do not find myself using it at all.  Obviously (most used lens) I am enjoying the 35 Summilux in terms of overall image quality, low light capability, focal length flexibility with ability to crop in with high resolution of M11/M11-P.  The weight of this lens is also very well balanced on the M11/M11-P and good for all day carry.  I personally think you have the right two lenses for your M11.  I do like having the added reach of the 90 Summicron for some specific situations.  The reason for the 21 Super Elmar is for landscape or city scapes were the extra reach is desired, but I tend to use my SL system for these situations with the 24-90 and the added benefits of weather sealing for harsh environments and a single lens / camera combination.

Enjoy the M11.  Since owning mine the SL has taken a back seat for everyday use.

Welcome. Just take photos with  the two lenses you have and stop buying.

This goes against the Big Leica wishes and thus a code of conduct violation.

Also the latest cron 28 that came out with the M11-P is amazing, close focus is handy, and 28mm does make a huge difference for dinner photos and medieval Italian cityscapes.

It is good advice.

I just wish there was a pill for it which I could take  :D:D:D

Oh, there is. Just buy at least one of each focal length, or in the case of 75mm, three and for 50mm, half a dozen.

There's only so much you can do with wide open aperture and blurry F1.4 bokeh... mostly it's not storytelling. And F1.4 was a requirement in the older days, when you'd have to push grainy film to get enough exposure. Today's sensors make such apertures redundant in many ways. Just saying. Of course it all depends on your eye and style of photography.

If you don’t mind the narrower DOF, f/1.4 vs. f/2.8 (2 stops) can still have an advantage in low light shooting (e.g., ISO 1600 vs 6400).

Like all cameras, the M11 has its strengths and limitations. It's a tool that needs to be learned in order to unveil its full potential.

There are many cameras that are more helpful to the novice user, but few that offer the same user satisfaction, once mastered.

I suggest that you put in a lot of time using the camera and learning from your mistakes. Do not "take" photographs. "Make" photographs.

YES! M11 is making me humble haha
It has taught me how bad of a photographer I am actually and is encouraging me to go out take more pictures.

Long way to go but there's start

Hmmmm maybe  Q3 is a good option instead of that new 28 for my M11 🙂

the camera that does nothing to help you is the absolute best for a novice! That way you learn what everything does and how it affects four image! I learned on a zenit E global! Stop down metering screw mount from russia.  On this count theM11 is a great camera to learn on as is every other M leica!

after the 1st week, I realized that this M11 is forcing me to learn how to take pictures
very hard to get the focus on point when I am outside but eventually I will get hang of it.

I'm going through that learning curve with my m110P as well and I'm really enjoying it, missed shots and all.

My 2 cents: Buy light and small lenses with your M11. Think of how often you really need an aperture of f/1.4 or faster (even in dim light). My big mistake at the beginning was: Summilux lenses. I bought then twice: Now I still have the Summiluxes but I do not use them (too big and too heavy). Instead I use 21mm Super Elmar or Summicron 28mm  (I plan to buy an Elmarit 28mm) or even a 50mm Summarit (This one I could buy second hand just after it got clear that Leica was not offer the Summarits any more which is a big mistake in my view).

But of course if you want to buy Summiluxes and you need this fast glas then that if of course excellent too.

This is great advice. I have quite a lens collection but very often I have a 28mm Elmarit on and it's great, small and not crazy expensive.

Zone focus is pretty easy, especially with wider lenses. Took these today, I use zone about 95% of the time with 24, 28 and 35mm lenses.
