SL3 vs SL2...

I know, all speculations, but there seem to be some rumors with quite some information. Do you plan to upgrade from SL2 to SL3 or not (supposing the rumors are correct), and if so, what are the main reasons?

    • I believe the SL3 is a nice upgrade, but the SL2 is still so good that I don't want to pay for the upgrade. I will keep my SL2

I would probably choose the "stick with SL2" but I don't really see the SL3 as a "good upgrade" so far at least. At least not for me. The body changes are not appealing to me, the AF is not an issue in my work, and the sensor seems to be better in some ways, but worse in others than the SL2. So I think I am going to sit this one out and wait for an S4 or SL4.

I have two two SL2 bodies and an SL2-S. Even if I were tempted to trade in one of my SL2 bodies for an SL3, it would mean having to muscle memorise the buttons for the SL3. Too much hassle.  Bottom line—for my needs, an upgrade would make zero difference to my workflow and photos. I'm sitting this one out too.

I crashed my SL2 a few years ago when taking a tumble on some wet rocks on the New England Coast. Though dented on the base, the camera has continued to function properly for the most part over the past two years (Fotos use seems problematic, otherwise things work as expected).  I mention this as while I do have some incentive to upgrade, after reading Jono's article, I just can't see pulling the trigger on this one.

I think his first two paragraphs sum up precisely what I suspected.  We find ourselves, after two decades of giant leaps, squarely at the point of diminishing return. Refinement certainly can be compelling, and I dont doubt that this latest version does represent some steps forward, but in my case, until my SL2 dies, I think any further investment is better done on the optical side.

I asked at the store and they said yes, but I did not get a chance to check myself. It is not listed in the drive mode section in the datasheet I saw. 
overall the focus does seem quicker, but I did not like the power switch or overall feel compared to the SL2. It felt cramped to me. The tilting screen seemed sturdy, so I think it will be durable. Overall a very nice feeling camera with a nice design. I still think the SL2 and SL2S are better. So much so that I took the opportunity to pick up a nearly brand new SL2S at a great price to replace my S1.

My reason exactly. For important events I shoot with two bodies to avoid lens changes. It is important that they both have the same (or very similar) user interface. To get that with the Leica SL series one needs to have two of the same generation in order to have anything like a similar user interface. I currently have an SL2 and will pick up an SL2-S trade in on an SL3. Can't afford two SL3s.

I am convinced that at base ISO the SL2 sensor is better in high contrast scenes than the 60 MP BSI Sony sensor. There is something about the way it deals with light. I did some test shots when the SL2 came out which I posted in a thread on this forum. It’s downhill at ISO 640 and higher, though.

I know what you mean, the changes are significant, not only in the touch screen but also in the functions placed on the wheels. 

It would be interesting if they bring this menu to the SL2, they have done it in the past for some cameras.

My 2 cents of feedback from my short initial encounter with the camera at the launch yesterday:

  • I was impressed how fast the AF was with the SL50 lens – it really made a difference compared to SL2. 
  • The ergonomics were very good – it seemed lighter in hand than the SL2, even with the heavy SL50. 
  • I could not get my head immediately around the new button layout and menu system – I am sure this is something that needs getting used to. 
  • The camera seemed a bit slower when shooting quick sequences in the single image mode than the SL2.  
  • The camera I was loaned was Pat’s pre-production specimen with which he shot the campaign – the menu was blinking when I was switching language from German to English. I assume this has been fixed in the final firmware. 
  • I noticed strong moire (green and red stripes and other typical patterns) in one of the campaign pictures, in the dress that the model in Namibia was wearing. The images were printed in large format and displayed on the wall - the moire was easy to see. The dress was likely artificial fibre, so moire was to be expected, but I was a bit surprised that 61MP was not enough to avoid it. Something to watch out for. 

I will probably upgrade, main reason being the significantly better AF with the SL50 which is my favourite lens within the system.

The absence of content-authentication and documented multi-shot at release, as well as a one-direction flip-screen on which a good deal of functionality depends but is housed such that it appears can be bumped from the side and bottom, and I’ll pass on the SL3 and keep and my SL2. 

I’ll be saving up for a Summilux-L 1:1.4 50mm and perhaps an L-mount long zoom instead.
