If you have NR turned on and take a shot with the lens cap on, the M11 will make a dark frame reduction shot to reduce noise because it's assuming you're taking a super-dark (night sky) shot. The resulting correction can take a "long" time (over a minute sometimes).
This is very useful for astrophotography; not so much for my general use

NR seems to be turned on by default, so I often wonder if this is the cause of at least some of the reports of the camera "hanging" on the first shot 
 

Really? Even with a fast shutter speed, i.e. 1/500, chosen by user, the NR still kicks in?

Anyhow, I never use NR, it's the most useless function to me. So I wouldn't know.

However, I have not yet seen any convincing arguments in favor of the cap. I don't shoot in the Sahara Desert, but in the city. It is possible that, once in the desert, I will be forced to change my habit😀

I probably should use a lens cap (which I take off and put into the lens box) especially when going to Death Valley, but I never have and do not plan on doing. I will heed the advice of Ict though for he is more experienced than I.

Assume no one likes the minimal degradation a clear filter invokes, even though protecting front element from damage, but not the harmful sun's rays?

A lens is an expensive and complex device. Any filter is a much cheaper thing. The combination of these things is not taken into account by the lens designers and there will obviously be unintended aberrations due to the addition of two refractive surfaces

I mean, I don’t keep the cap on while I’m out shooting  But since I don’t use a filter, I like to have them on in the camera bag or on the camera if I’m not using the camera for awhile. 
 

It’s just a preference  And of course when I first got the camera, I inadvertently took a shot with the cap on and presto: NR delay!

Well understood. BTW Leica even sells UVa filters which most Leica stores will tell you is good protection for the front element. Agree that lens hoods protect the front element alleviating the need for a protection filter.

They also say that the soft shutter button helps dampen vibration, and the half-case will protect the camera when dropped😂

My M11 is always updated to the latest firmware. I use coded Leica lenses and uncoded CV lenses with the camera set to auto detect. I’ve only ever used one SD card in the camera (a SanDisk 64GB 300Mb/s) and always format in camera and have never used SD card formatter. I have the camera set to Low Continuous drive but almost always just take a single shot at a time. I always focus using the rangefinder and use either field or highlight weighted metering. The rear screen is off and I rarely use it to review shots/settings. I shoot slowly and infrequently so I may not be a statistically significant sample. 

I can’t think of any other criteria to help identify what I’ve done right but feel free to ask me!

I have never come close to filling a 64 GB card. I've no need for anything larger.  It also happens to match the in-camera memory.  I set the camera so images are written to both internal memory and the card as an added safety feature should the card ever go bad or, more likely, I drop the card and step on it or do something else equally foolish.

I'm also one of those people who'd rather carry two 64GB than one 128 GB card.  Personal preference.

I agree that a hood protects a lens... except when it is in the bag!  My one case of a scratched filter (many, many years ago) occurred when the camera was in a camera bag.   My practice is to keep the cap in the bag.  It comes off the camera when I take it out of the bag and goes back on the camera before returning it to the bag.  I also don't keep a filter on the lens any  more.  Another reason to protect the front element with a cap when it is in the bag.

I never use bags with metal parts inside. Usually my Billingham Hadley Small Pro bag has the inserts divided into 2 parts, one part slightly larger than the other. One fits the size of the camera with the Visoflex attached, the other (smaller) fits only the camera. I can’t imagine what could scratch something there.

I only shoot my m11 after my wife compliments the morning coffee I make.

That helps prevent freezing too.

Yes, I do. Not that often, mainly for remote control while the camera is on a tripod although I have occasionally transferred pictures to my iPhone with it. I can’t remember ever using it to embed location details as I wander around taking pictures. I’ve accidentally done that with my Q2 before now but not with my M11

So The Leica Fotos App does not seem to negatively affect your M11.
