mrkennethtong Posted January 12, 2024 Share #43 Posted January 12, 2024 Used it all way nearly to the death of the battery. Startup much faster. I turn it off between shots now.

wlaidlaw Posted January 12, 2024 Share #45 Posted January 12, 2024 Updated like I always do via the SD card. Too important to rely on a wifi/bluetooth connection, which can be interrupted by any passing bat. Start up noticeably faster. Virtually instant now. My first observations: - In AFs the AF is way more snappy in my dimly lit living room. There is no doubt, that's a definite improvement - Start up time was already fast with my Q3, so it's still fast. Maybe it is even a bit faster. But as said, I never faced the issue of a slow start up - Black-out time in single shot might be a bit shorter. Not sure about this. I tried to memorize before and after, but I am not sure. I also not have a good memorized gut-feeling for it from daily use, as I use the preview-when-shutter-stays-pressed-down-function. Therefore it was a non issue for me. There definitely still is some black-out time. Correction: I believe it is definitely a tiny bit shorter. - BUT: It is really crazy when shooting in 2- or 4-frames/s: There is ZERO black out time. The live-view just stays on. This is crazy good and shows what is possible with this camera. I don't understand why there is still a black out in single shot - Overall everything is very snappy now Now just fix the black-out in single-shot and everything is perfect. Overall a great update! That’s what I felt too! Cheers !

I did try (and succeed) with the previous firmware update (i.e., using FOTOS). I still much prefer the method of putting the file on an SD card and updating that way—not relying on unbroken communication between phone and camera. I don't believe I'm alone in that. In the circumstances I shan't delete my quoted post. 😄 Stephen 6
nsansomuk Posted January 12, 2024 Share #49 Posted January 12, 2024 Could someone be kind enough to start me off here please... I am generally tech-savvy but can't readily see how the Fotos app can be used to update the firmware. Do I need to make a physical attachment of the iPhone to the mac do get the download installed to Fotos or should it just be quietly updating itself in the background. I'm assuming the camera will be able to download and install the updated firmware from the app via Bluetooth? Again though, an idiots guide would be useful. Thanks in advance to anyone with useful tips here. Cheers, Nigel

Try it Works like a dream, not sure why anyone needs blackout free on single shot, in fact how can it even be a black out because you've finished taking your series of 1 shot 😆 1

Once the firmware is sent, then the camera performs the update. The app is not involved in the update itself. You are not “relying on unbroken communication between phone and camera.” It’s the same using a SD card. The SD card loads the firmware into the camera and the camera performs the update.

The option to update the camera will be shown on the app. If you haven’t setup the app yet read the user guide.

Stephen I would assume the camera runs a validation check by comparing the hash of the firmware image on camera vs the hash of the firmware image on the Fotos app, and launch the firmware update only when there’s a 100% match. It’s a really basic check that pretty much every company does. Your smartphone, computer, tablet, smart tv and pretty much every device use the same methodology. The only reason why it goes through Fotos is that the Q camera has no direct internet connectivity (yet?) and that smartphones have faster download speed. Goon525 Posted January 12, 2024 Share #56 Posted January 12, 2024 Fairly new to the Leica userbase, I’ve had no difficulty with the update via the App, and the recovery of my user profiles, which I consider pretty vital. My question relates to firmware numbering. I’d have expected a full re number 1-2 in this case, to imply some extra functionality. But is there anything here which justifies that? So why not 1.0.5 or maybe 1.1. Not the most important thing in the world, just a bit odd.

Stephen When the camera asks you if you want to update the firmware, that means it’s been loaded into the camera’s internal memory and ready for update. If it didn’t load the camera wouldn’t ask you. According to Leica, this update has a lot of features and I’m guessing as they added stuff they changed the firmware number internally. Once they added enough stuff to release as an update they made it public. Kind of like how I edit images. I go through multiple versions and file names before I post or release something. I think people would be pretty upset if Leica released all those updates one by one… lol Maybe the exception being the startup times.

Skidmark Posted January 12, 2024 Share #60 Posted January 12, 2024 Just did the update- via wifi in Leica fotos app on an Apple iPhone 13 Pro max. Took a hair over 5 min. Super easy and quick. My Q3 build date was 31OCT and using a PNY Elite PRO60 256GB card if that helps anyone. Start up time from switching on to snapping a pic literally took 2 seconds. Much improved! Shut down is still the same.
