jaapv Posted December 30, 2024 Share #801 Posted December 30, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I always use raw+JPG although I couldn’t say why. I only use JPG in the rarest of cases, if at all.
Advertisement Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Leica M11 -purplish tint ???. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted December 30, 2024 Share #802 Posted December 30, 2024 I have re-discovered jpegs with the M11. Adjusting WB is a breeze with them and i do like the M11 color profile otherwise. Matter of taste...
don daniel Posted December 30, 2024 Share #803 Posted December 30, 2024 JPGs are fun for quick sharing with family in shared icloud album and for quick posting in social media. I also use JPGs (mostly medium size) for quick downloading to my iPhone and saving as a backup in iCloud. I wouldn’t want to do that with DNGs of the size produced by the M11. For that reason, I’m still glad if they’re really usable images. Otherwise, for me it’s clear: Leica M still means developing DNGs in a RAW converter, which is what I’ve always done. With my other system, the Nikon Z, I’m now working with JPGs almost all the time—except, of course, when the lighting situation is particularly challenging, such as stage lighting with LED spotlights or astrophotography. So, I don’t know if I fit into one of your mental boxes. But I don’t think my requirements are all that unusual: I want to be able to do both with a Leica, just like with a Nikon—produce absolute top-quality images and deliver instantly usable, appealing photos.
jaapv Posted December 30, 2024 Share #804 Posted December 30, 2024 If I would like my camera to behave like a Nikon, I would buy a Nikon. 1
hdmesa Posted December 30, 2024 Share #805 Posted December 30, 2024 M11 JPEGs are best for b&w – zero magenta issue 🫣 Everyone loves it when you share a b&w JPEG of them because for the most part, everyone looks better in b&w. So that's my setup even with the SL2-S – b&w film sim always selected, the process the DNG for color. Blinky highlight warnings and focus peaking are also easier to see in the b&w live view feed. Derbyshire Man Posted December 31, 2024 Share #806 Posted December 31, 2024 Just looking at an auction site and looked up some photographers, found this by Vivian Maier, many of the slide to print photo's for her and other photographers have a magenta tint noticeable in the blues and whites I'd post the photo but unsure about copyright https://www.artsy.net/artwork/vivian-maier-santa-fe-railroad-chicago

jaapv Posted December 31, 2024 Share #808 Posted December 31, 2024 ??? I can assure you that it is far more productive than trying to browbeat a manufacturer into acceding to your wishes on an Internet forum.

In any case, you have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. 1

Indeed, let alone that some people do like the M11 colors, as starting point for PP at least, and would not be happy if Leica change them w/o their approval.

M11 for me Posted December 31, 2024 Share #815 Posted December 31, 2024 Just today I had many M11 shots in the snow. The shown examples are just 2 at random: Tint is +17 and the other one +15 (AWB): Its not about composition or anything artistic. I am sitting in front of a calibrated Apple Studio Display. These are DNGs exported from LrC unedited. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! charlesphoto99 Posted December 31, 2024 Share #817 Posted December 31, 2024 We have a local magazine here that I used to shoot for number of years ago. To my eye the magazine was always printed with a green bias. Still is ten years later when I saw a recent copy. I find it ugly and just plain wrong. I mentioned once to the editor, but that didn't get much traction. So when I was sending them files, I would add a touch of extra magenta. It seems I was the only photographer doing it, and my images always looked better than the others (color quality wise). I think some people just don't see it, even off a printing press. I saw the M11 magenta tint from the first few image posts here when it came out. Seems it should be really dang obvious to anyone who prints or works with color 'science' to any degree. But I guess that's not always the case.

The camera does not take the photograph-the photographer does. There is not one camera on the market that produces my taste in colours out of the box. Why should Leica be different? Just profile it. I realize this post is a week old already but I think you summed the whole issue up nicely (once again : ) "Just profile it" That being said - I do hope Leica will return to a more neutral OOC offering (color wise) with the M12. Everybody saying the strong magenta tint is fine - please do take a look at the unedited raws shown in the video below, and tell me honestly whether you really didn't rather have a color output like this as your starting point when editing your files. You can still be the "photographer that takes the photograph" etc. - but start off with something neutral not with something flawed (which, let's face it, it is) Or how about not really having to edit at all, because it looks just awesome as is? For me, for my "retirement camera", that would be just splendid - because I spent so many years of my life in front of Adobe tools I'm just tired of it.
