After deciding to use the Panasonic 24-105 f4 on my current trip, it's almost certain that I shall now retire my 24-90. I'm really impressed with the Panasonic. Very sharp. Lighter. More range. I see very few downsides. Maybe the Leica draws better and has *slightly* better CA control?.

I am super surprised by how good my copy of the 24-105 is. So much lighter I can also carry a few i primes.

As of a few years ago, one had to choose either lens OIS for the 24-105, or use the SL2 IBIS; there was no integration or cumulative effect possible, unlike using the SL 24-90. Has there been any FW update to integrate stabilization?

Not that I'm aware of. But the OIS is good. At 50mm I'm shooting to nearly 1/2 second handheld, with good technique.

Thanks. So you prefer to use its OIS rather than IBIS in the SL2? Or do you use a LUMIX body, which can combine both?

Panasonic does focus on lightweight, parafocal, and quick AF.
When I did my side-by-side test with Leica 24-90 and Sigma 24-70, I noticed some evident weakness in optical performance in comparison to the other lenses.
I use many of the Panasonic S lenses for video, they just work better than the Leica offering. But they are softer than Leica lenses and have often ghosting and flare.

Looks like Sigma is going to have a 24-105 2.8 in September, which can be very exciting for me. it will compete to the Canon monster.
It is likely to replace my 24-90 in studio portrait, the extra reach will be good.

The 50mm  and 24-70mm S Pro are at least as sharp than the Leica SL 50mm f1.4 and SL 24-90mm, I had these 4 lenses.
If you speak about the Lumix 50mm f1.8 or 35mm f1.8, of course they are less sharp than the APO SL 50mm and 35mm, but the price and size are not the same.

agree the Pro line is good, big and heavy.

This is a timely thread for me. I've just got an SL2-S and am looking for a zoom to put on it more or less permanently. I'd originally assumed that I'd get the Leica or Sigma 24-70. Then I convinced myself that the 24-90 was the better "one and done" choice—a lot of money up front, but no need to upgrade lenses, ever. And then the Sigma 24-70 Mk II appeared, complicating that conclusion.

It seems like the rational choice would be the Sigma v2, but the thing that keeps the 24-90 in contention is that so many people say they love it. I'm not too concerned about size and weight.... The main thing is that I want image quality that will keep up with my M lenses. (I'm mainly an M shooter.) Not just in terms of sharpness, but in terms of a well-rounded and pleasing overall look that will work for both landscapes and portraits. The extra 20mm seems meaningful, too.

I'm going to stop by a store in the next couple of days and try one.

How do you know whether OIS or IBIS is being used in an SL3/24-105 combo?

Did a brief test between the two with my amazing wife.

Leica 24-90 at 90mm, more flattering skin (in my opinion) and saturated right out of camera.

Sigma 24-70 at 70mm cropped to match. Much cooler, but a sharper image.

About the 24-70 II from Sigma as the alternative - I compared that against my 35 and 50 M Summiluxes on the SL3 and also found the Sigma to be much cooler with a green/blue tint that was not so pleasing. Especially for skin tones. The Sigma is lovely small, sharp and fast and a better travel  companion. But if size and weight are no issue,  colors may indeed be nicer with the monster.

As part of (another) rationalisation, my 24-90 has been sitting at the local dealer looking for a buyer (it has just had a CLA at Wetzlar).  No takers.  I’m picking it up today as it has more use on my camera than sitting on a shelf.  As a single lens option on the SL, it is hard to resist.

OIS button is on the lens.  If it’s set to on, then IBIS is disabled in the camera menu; if off, then IBIS can be set on or off.  At least that’s how it worked on the SL2 in 2021, according to a video I recently watched.  With a LUMIX body, the two functions can be combined.

Thank you, all clear!

Happily I own a 24-90 so I don’t need to make any choice regarding a new lens. The extra reach of the 24-90 is very welcome, so if I had to buy now, the newly announced panasonic would be interesting as well. 24mm or 105mm?

If you switch off the OIS switch on a lens that has a switch on it, then IBIS can be switched on and off on the camera. If OIS is on this is disabled.

Gordon

Thanks!

BTW, I used to have a 24-105 but sold it. I will give it another try.
