I have encountered an issue with DHL who are now chasing me for the import duty when I have already paid UK VAT. I am hoping to resolve this and are awaiting a response from the UK online store. AdamMark Posted May 26, 2023 Share #43 Posted May 26, 2023 (edited) A level playing field - It seems somewhat unfair that some have already received their Q3’s whilst others are on pre - order ( whatever that means ) Fuji have adopted a similar scenario with their cameras ie X100V in my opinion. In my opinion It’s about time that these companies acted fairly and made sure that there are sufficient quantities of the product at launch. Rather than creating a pent up demand that adds hype and frenzy to the product. And feeds sales of course. What does pre - order mean “ a 1 month wait , 2 months , 3 months or more “ At the very least the producers of these products should be fair to customers by at least giving them a very accurate time frame ! Leica keep us in the loop ….. please. The whole scenario is a disgrace Edited May 26, 2023 by AdamMark

The whole scenario is a disgrace Sounds like economic suicide to have to build up a giant warehouse full of very expensive inventory so you can make sure everyone that wants one on launch day will get one. Not even Apple does this and they have a lot more resources than Leica. Imagine stockpiling 10,000 x $6000 worth of cameras. That’s $60million dollars that is literally sitting there collecting dust and prevents Leica from deploying that capital towards other more useful things like R&D, purchasing parts to build more cameras, buying equipment to improve their productivity and quality, etc… And if you screw up your forecast, you’re now sitting on a ton of unsold inventory that will be worthless in due time and you could literally sink the entire company. AdamMark Posted May 26, 2023 Share #45 Posted May 26, 2023 I take your point but they knew full well that there would be huge demand for this product. So why not produce more. Now they have people on the waiting list waiting patiently and the unforgivable thing is that these people are not given accurate timescales - Its still a poor show , in my opinion. How many is enough? Your guess is as good as Leica’s. Word on the street is that Leica only intended to sell 6000 Qs in its entire design life but ended up selling 60,000 over 4 years. They couldn’t keep up with demand for the entire 4 years. Assuming Leica can produce 15,000 units/year, to stock pile 10,000 units for launch would take 8 months. Do you want them to delay launch by 8 months just so they can stockpile a ton of inventory for launch day? What you’re asking doesn’t make any business sense. I’d rather see Leica not go bankrupt as I like their products and I want them to be around in 10 years. Also, increasing throughput requires capital investment. They can’t make those investment if they’re stockpiling cameras they don’t sell because that money is tied up in unsold inventory. Samy LA had two, already reserved. Pasadena for some reason said it wasnt released yet. I need a back up for my Sl2S, I wasnt a fan of the Q2 iso performance so hopefully the Q3 will fit the bill. Probably going to sell the 35APO, 24-90 to cover the cost. 75 Apo SL2s and Q3 would make a decent event kit I think. 35 Apo??? That’s tough decision

luetz Posted May 26, 2023 Share #49 Posted May 26, 2023 If you want to keep the Q3 in "High Demand", long term, don't oversupply. That's what makes people want it even more. The Auto Industry has been doing it for years...

That’s tough decision I’m going to try to take the Q3 and the SL2-S with my 35 APO and 50 APO out tomorrow to do some comparison shooting. Not sure if I’ll compare it with my 50 Summilux-SL or not. Even though it would be interesting to see how the Q3 compares with the SL2-S and the 75 APO I think the resolution difference with the Q3 crop makes it a moot point for anyone doing any larger printing. As an aside, I really like that the thirds grid lines are scaled within the 35/50/75/90 frame lines in the Q3. 3

I swear the APO lenses make the SL2S look like a high resolution monster. My whole debate is do I buy ( I did preorder) a Q3 or a 2nd SL2S for my weddings. If you can be so kind to do some 3200-6400 iso test comparisons that would be amazing.

I think for them, they are kind of in the dark too since he said that theres no consistency in how many Q3s they get from Leica, nor is there any consistency in the frequency of Q3 shipments from Leica. Also they don't get any advanced notices beyond two days with Q3 shipments from Leica. My only thing with BHphoto is that I didn't want to pay tax, and I don't have the payboo card after they switched from synchrony bank. Depending on the delay, maybe it might've been worth paying the tax if its like months of waiting though aha.....

My issue with BH is that now they charge the card right away (it used to be only when it shipped) and I don’t feel comfortable being charged there and then thinking Leica might arrive first l, plus I wanted to come pick it up in the store since I’m ten minutes away from the Leica store in Miami. Anyhow, I think I made a mistake not pre ordering from BH at 9am as well.

It is Leica who have chosen to ship the order from Germany [and are liable for any cross boarder tax settlement]. I now have the purchase invoice from Leica, which clearly states I have paid VAT and that import duties are to be settled [by Leica] to a DHL account. Seems that the [3rd party] distributor may have incorrectly raised the shipping paperwork, though I would have thought they ship to the UK from Europe all the time. Hopefully, I'll get a response later today. Edited May 27, 2023 by Nick_London

As the “victim” of prior Leica launches, this time I asked to go on a Q3 waitlist at my favourite UK dealer about a year ago. They didn’t have a list at that point, so I went on top of the new list, and picked up my Q3 on Thursday from their small allocation of 3 units. Live and learn.
