What I don't understand: There are some nice video features - but no Microphone Input?! That's a little bit strange.

And for the first time HDMI out, but it's HDMI Type D. ok, so they can keep a small size

I assume it has a built-in mic. With any recordings you have three choices: (1) internal mic, (2) external connected and (3) external independently recorded. I tend to use 1 or 3: in fact usually 3, with 1 just serving the purpose of syncing the external sound. So this would be OK for me, but can sympathise with those who want 2. Are we sure there is no mic-in socket under the cover with the USB-C port?

What I am really looking for is any report of unlimited video duration i.e. limited only by recording capacity, not an artificial 30 mins.

Edit. Leica Rumors says 29mins. That's a b#663r if true. I hope external video recording allows longer, though I really don't want an external recorder with such a small device.

A lot of focus on the video capabilities and I understand this will be really important to a lot of people.  But if you're not interested in video (I'm not) and the other enhancements, like USB charging and a flippy screen, are not so important, does the Q3 really offer anything better than a Q2?

OK, I get the improvements in monitor and EVF resolution, but that doesn't affect the output (my photos) and a higher speed continuous frames per second is not something I've ever used in a compact 28mm fixed lens camera.

I'm sure it will be a very good camera but . . . . .

Agreed. Including HDMI out but not including a microphone in is incongruous.

HDMI out to an Atomos for 8k or ProRes purpose is one thing. Requiring a mic set-up in addition to the Atomos would be silly for a Q camera.

Here’s to hoping the reference to the HDMI out is actually a misreference that correctly means microphone in port.  Or maybe Leica will sell a microphone with an HDMI connector to match the camera port.

A Q camera with these rumored Q3 specs WITH a microphone-in would be an incredibly useful device.  And (Dear Leica), I would buy one.

Definitely. To begin with, improved noise at high iso and better autofocus, which were the main reasons I got rid of the Q2 after 3 months.

But, more importantly, the Q3 is not meant just as an upgrade from the Q2, but also as a new camera for other people that were not too impressed with the previous iteration or that are new to Leica.

Why the 30 minute recording limits? Who imposes such a limit on a $6,000 camera in 2023?

It would probably have needed exterior cooling fins for more than 30 minutes or a large and heavy heat sink. Over the last 23+ years using digital Leica cameras (since the Fuji built Digilux zoom) and before that, 40 years of using Leica film cameras, I doubt that I have taken more than 10 videos and none longer than a few minutes. In my collection of Leicas, I do have a Leicina Special Super 8 Cine camera. Have I ever used it - no? Compromising the whole camera to suit the few (very few I suspect) who would choose to use a fixed 28mm lens camera for professional video, would seem a very weird decision. If you want to take professional level videos, best to use the correct tool for the job, a Red or Sony video camera, with Leica cine lenses if that is what is required.

Historically the EU classified cameras that could record video for longer than 30 mins as video recorders, which were subject to higher duties. This was a protectionist device to protect Phillips. The rule was removed in about 2018, but it still seems to hang on as a limit in places. The SL2-S had no limit at launch. The SL2 had a 30 min limit, but it was removed with a firmware upgrade IIRC - it has none now. If the Q3 has such a limit one of my first questions to Leica will be if this is a technical limit (for heat management as Wilson says) or whether it will be removed in a f/w update.

I use video for recording plays and music performances, so I want to record for at least 80mins at a time. It would be handy to use the compact Q3 for this rather than the SL2-S (which I use now). I could add an Atomos Ninja, but that makes a nonsense of the Q3 size. I already have a tiny Sigma fp that records to a SSD, but the Q3 offers the chance to (a) keep with Leica colours and (b) reduce my cameras by one!

For those who have been pushing for a 35mm+ lens on a future Q, there’s an interesting answer from Stefan Daniel on why 28mm here.

It came down to the maximum diameter of the shutter that’s commercially available for the lens. A 35mm+ wouldn’t have allowed for a large aperture of f/1.7. It would be f/2.0, f/2.8, or smaller depending on the target focal length.

Q2:

Autofocus system: Contrast-based autofocus system

Autofocus metering methods: Single zone (225 fields), multi-field, face recognition, subject tracking.

Q3 (according to LR😞

Autofocus system: Hybrid-AF due to combination of contrast metering, depth mapping, and phase comparison metering with AF metering points in the sensor.

Autofocus metering methods: Spot (can be shifted), Field (can be shifted and scaled), Multi-Field, Zone (can be shifted), Eye/Face/Body Detection, Eye/Face/Body + Animal Detection, Tracking

That would put the UK price at around £6,100 (including 20% VAT). If correct, that is more than I had hoped but less than I had feared.
