Update regarding 1.4/35 Summilux 'steel rim' vignetting with filter & hood.

With both of the hoods tending to be problematic, I wish that I could select a “hood delete” option, when ordering the re-issued Steel Rim Summilux, resulting in a savings of a few hundred US dollars. A significant reason that I would want such a lens would be its lowered profile, probably using a Heliopan brass step-up ring to act as armor against minor impacts.

It will attach but as they demonstrated, it is supposed to make a definite click when it is in place. Mine does not do that. The little clamps don’t find the assigned grooves on the lens. An update on this lens. I am still waiting - almost 12 weeks now - for Leica to replace the faulty OLLUX they supplied with my lens. There is also no update on the replacement for the faulty (vignetting) vented shade.

I think I posted this this morning in the wrong thread, so here it is again for this more relevant thread:

Ok, a solution of sorts for the lenshood/filter/vignetting issue that bugs many of us who bought the 35 Summilux Classic, and cheaper than the other option of just buying the otherwise excellent VM 35 Nokton I.4 II SC......( which is worth getting anyway if you use B&W film )

The other day I found and ordered this lens hood off of Amazon Fr:

It arrived this morning much sooner than expected and I have tested it out on my M10-R with the 35 Summilux and a Leica x16 13055 ND filter and there is no vignetting now, then re-mounting the Leica vented hood and re-testing again with the same ND on the lens and there's the annoying hard corner vignetting. So for the outlay of €7.99 for the hood bought off of Amazon the filter/vignetting problem does go away. Downside is that the slots in the vented hood do not quite line up properly so there's not a clear shot through them in the viewfinder, however this is not a big deal and varies with filter thickness anyway, it's a hell of a lot better than hard vignetting.........But then the same thing happens with the Leica supplied hood depending on the threads and thickness of whichever filter you use. One nice bonus with the €7.99 lens hood is that you get a cap that fits over the hood and you get some decent extra lens protection that way.

I hope that Leica will come up with the solution it owes to us who bought into this otherwise magic little Summilux, a replacement lens hood needs to be thought out and executed well. It occurred to me throughout all this dance that if a hood was designed that could accept filters inside the hood like used to be offered with the earlier versions of the Summilux 35 that could be a better idea with using say a 49mm filter thread inside the hood.............Don't know. But meanwhile here is a temporary answer to the annoyance with a grand outlay of about €8,00. The way Voigtlander have done all this with the 35 1.4 Nokton kit is still way better than Leica's efforts in my opinion though.

Update: today I collected the replacement OLLUX. Now that I can see how it fits to the lens I'm really happy with it. And it looks like it offers quite a lot of protection to that front element.

Hi,  I just found a 48mm filter (I am using an old canon 48mm filter) plus little two side tape can be perfectly fit into the hood .😌

I have received today by UPS a new hood directly from Wetzlar. Unfortunately I can’t test it in the near future. Excited to see if the new one will to better than the first version

Hi all, I received the "new" Lens hood in August directly from LEICA Wetzlar. Now, I had time to compare the "old" and the "new". Note that booth version had the same serial n° .... which may be confiusing. The concept of the two version is the same, but there is a clear difference in size / depth. (see attached photos).  I haven't done some tests but I guess that the new version do it better. 

In any case, LEICA has delivered. Thanks for correcting this issue.

Same serial # for two different items is weird.  And not helpful!

I received mine, but from the heights don’t seem much different like @siggigun posted but i noticed, the barrel which has the filter thread seems slimmer? 
anyway, never use the hood and still not bothered putting it on yet

I just cannot understand why Leica did not tell each store who sold these lenses to contact the owner about a new hood. I found out on FM and then asked Leica for replacement. Never heard a word and asked a Leica employee (not in a store) to find out what is going on. A week later I get an email from someone saying they were out of the new slim hood and I will eventually get one.

Bad customer care. Actually no customer care.

I was told by Leica-somewhere I am on the list and it will come when more are available. My problem with the Leica Store I deal with was after asking them to help on this matter they said they would look into it and never got a word back.

Those two screw-on hoods are cheap chinese hoods that used to sell on ebay for 1.49$ and free shipping. I stopped looking but they are maybe 2.99 now. 
 

Counterfeiting this hood is extremely easy: ask the chinese supplier to stamp the correct words instead the usual white lettered made in china. This is also why Leica can be so liberal with those cheapies and send one to whoever asks. They most probably source them at 0.08$ each. 
 

When the time comes, the chinese will churn out thousands of those, a 30 minute job at the factory.

This isn’t funny anymore. They’re also countrrfeiting the extremely rare MP/M2 Leicavit, from Scratch… Brass and all. Look at Ebay.  

They are hurting the Leica collector market that’s for sure. From the repaints to plainly and simply manufacturing the parts, now.

IMO, the day is not far when we’ll start seeing “new old stock, Original brand new in box” Black paint M234 “genuine” appearing. Then, sold as being genuine or plainly sold as remarkable copies.

What’s coming does not smell good.

Update from me on the 12486 replacement hood.

I last chased my Leica authorised dealer in Paris in mid-July, and they said that no replacement hoods had been received. 

I have now chased once more, and await an update from them. @SiggiGun's post with photos and confirmation of replacement has been especially helpful, because at least from this it is clear a replacement exists, and I can show my dealer the fix. 

It goes without saying that - 
- Leica should never have sent this lens out with a faulty hood in the first place
- upon first notification of the problem, Leica should have proactively instituted a recall and exchange
- once it was left to customers to request - and chase - this part, it should have been dealt with quickly. 
- customers should not have to explain the problem to authorised dealers / boutique staff. They should all have received internal memos on that.

I bought this lens on November 2nd, 2022. 

I will update this thread when the replacement hood arrives.
