Update regarding 1.4/35 Summilux 'steel rim' vignetting with filter & hood.

I have just received this email from Leica customer care (and have been asked for my lens serial number & shipping details).
I assume it will take some time so my $7.00 eBay cheapie will do just fine till then.
Excellent communication from Leica acknowledging the problem and offering a solution.
Good news 🙂

Here is the official statement regarding the vignetting of the steel rim.

First, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. The Leica brand stands to a high degree for perfection and exceptional quality, and our customers can rightly expect the absolute reliability of our products.

The Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 is equipped with a lens hood in a classic design. Since it is not possible to use it with today's filters, we decided to add another, modern lens hood to the scope of delivery to enable the simultaneous use of lens hood and filter.

Unfortunately, we found that this combination leads to undesirable vignetting. Leica lenses are known for their excellent image performance, we are extremely sorry that we did not live up to the Leica standard in this case.

We are already working diligently on a technical solution in the form of a newly designed lens hood.  As soon as this is available, we will inform you and provide you with a replacement free of charge. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

We hope you will find this to be a satisfactory solution, as our customers and customers’ satisfaction are our top priority.

Just received my official email admitting the problem. I’m impressed they actually did it. Does this mean our original defective hoods are going to be worth big money someday?

I really hope they solve the thread alignment issue too so the black bar isn’t in the way of the viewfinder. They admitted to me in email that the thread alignment is more or less random chance on the existing hood.

thanks for the update. So do we all need to reach out or will they be issuing an official updated hood that will be send to all the retailers who sold the lenses?

I would advise registering the lens on the website (hard to find in the long list of Summilux 35 lenses over the years - Leica list it as ‘Classic’)  and contacting Leica Customer Care with an expression of interest.

It's nice to see that Leica thoroughly tests its products before release.  Interestingly this lens was released with the new M6.  Which as we know has had issues too.

Maybe Leica should hire Light Lens Lab as consultants to see how they should re-release product?

And there's the updated 35 lux with the free-floating aperture blades. I had one of those for a while.

I have contacted the Leica wetzlar, too.  They said they are planning  a new designed hood and took serial number of my len and the mailing address.

How did you contact Leica?   Phone, email, carrier pigeon?  Can you provide the contact information?  Thanks!

Out of given occasion:

  • Please do not post email addresses, this is perfect fodder for spammers ;)
  • Functional email addresses are OK if modified (like info [at] leica-camera [dot] com) but no personal addresses
  • Same goes with customer care employees: Please don't post their names and email addresses

Thanks

Andreas

You're right and thank for the information.

Leica responded very fast to my request concerning this issue. So, I think we all will have some good news in the near futur. Just to remember, all lenses have "border darkening" depending on the diaphragm used. Wide open more, closed down less. However In this specific case the Lens hood (with filter!) is the issue. The "old fashion" original lens hood works fine.

That is right . I can not figure out why Leica do not let use any filter when the new OLLUX is on . I have to abandon the new OLLUX and put an ultra slim E46 filter on the len instead.
