In my experience the benefits of a stop faster shutter speed and/or better aperture are more apparent than any noise or DR differences between 50 and 100. At least for modern cameras. Even with stabilization, I find that having a shutter speed over 1/250th tends to help quite a bit at getting a sharp edge to edge photo.

On the other hand, why would Auto-ISO use 100 instead of 50 as the lowest ISO?

Also, P2P measurement shows lowered PDR at ISO 50 vs ISO 100.

I never bothered with ISO 50. Has anyone any experience with ISO 50 vs 100?

I use it when I need it because of to much light.

The problem is if native is iso100, use it as ISO50 will not bring any benefit at the risk of over expose the highlight by over exposure 1 stop.  (You can do the same with iso100 overexposure 1 stop)

Which means that 50 is a pull value. The DR is clipped at the top, so you have to be careful with highlights.

So Pierre, with the SL3 having less body width and the grip being fatter did you experience the infamous Sony knuckle sandwich with any of the lens barrels?

No, I tried it with the SL Summilux 50mm which is quite a hefty lens and no knuckle sandwich 😉

But I have small hands...

But ISO 50 is still measured as a native value (the symbol is not open). The highlights are weird at ISO 50, and the raw histogram for clipped channels looks strange (RawDigger).

This is totally confusing and cannot be correct. A sensor has a native value (disregarding Dual ISO here) which is derived from the unamplified signal from the sensor. It cannot have a series of native values from 50-100.000 Those are amplified (or pulled) values.

The weird behavior may be caused by Leica using a non-linear part of the sensor with ISO 50.

The condition of your aramide fibers is still in good condition.  Mine started to fray after one year of use 😩

Actually I cover with half case before, but bulky and i removed it. Actually front with white and fray...

I get what you're saying (I think) but it would seem having ISO 50 might be more useful to the camera itself in auto-ISO, being able to drop down a stop to compensate for shutter speed + aperture values that are fixed by the user.

But if the auto modes aren't making use of ISO 50 then it does seem an unnecessary inclusion, but probably no more strange than including f/22 on a lens even though it can cause issues due to diffraction. When you need the stop, you need the stop, and as long as you're aware of the pitfalls it's all good I guess.

So Leica Rumors just posted that the SL3 will be coming sometime this year…. thought it might be fun to take some guesses about what features the camera will include and see how close we can get to the finished item.

I’m guessing 60 Mega pixel BSI sensor with phase detection AF, same body shape, except possibly the addition of a tilt screen (actually really hoping they don’t include this last feature). Possibly internal memory a la the M11?

One year later . . . we didn’t quite make 100 pages and 2,000 posts, but there is a couple of hours to go 🙈

What time is the presentation/event/release/launch today?

For this camera that we know what it looks like, know what its specs are, but we are all desperate to know what it's actually 'like'.😁

I am most interested in how the images look, and whether they differ from cameras with related sensors. Even if this is the same res basic silicon as in the M11 or Q3, there's always the chance of an updated model, and Leica specs its own cover glass and CFA, aside from refining its own in-camera colour treatment. And with a new processor in a bigger body than M11 or Q3 (for heat dissipation), it can carry out more heavy lifting than they can, perhaps to improve white balance analysis, focus target recognition etc.

The illuminated power button is a strange choice. It probably doubles as a REC tally light. I always turn those off…

A tally light is usually on the front - from the rear you can see the screen to tell you if it's recording or not. But I turn it off as well!

Video cameras have tally lights all over.
