I got drafted in April 1966 and after 16 weeks of training got orders to head for Vietnam. I went in to see my commanding officer and told him if I'm going to Vietnam, I want to get there in the best possible condition so I volunteered for the Airborne. We were issued Corcoran Jump Boots on day one and told we had until the next morning to have the toes and heels spit-shined enough to see our reflections. It took about six hours but the finish was hard as rock. I was later issued jungle boots but kept these and stored them away after I got out in 1968. These have been untouched and in my basement for 45 years and still have much of the original shine. I should throw them out but can't bring myself to do it. Welcome, dear visitor! Glasauge Posted January 25, 2023 Share #2 Posted January 25, 2023 In 1966 I was 11 years old and my parents allowed me to watch german newscast on tv, every night ... I still do remember those clips showing poignant scenes of war ... I am glad you survived it. You might throw those boots out just as well, your memories will last ... 2
michali Posted January 26, 2023 Share #3 Posted January 26, 2023 (edited) Great image Brent & a fascinating story, thank you for sharing. I can relate to this. Not too dissimilar to my experience after being drafted into the South African army in 1978, one pair of boots (spit & polish) for inspections & another pair when being out in the bush. stuny Posted January 26, 2023 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2023 Lovely. My USAF combat boots, which I continued to wear decades later in all sorts of weather finally got too worn to save. I joined USAF on July 27th at 8:00 AM, 30 minutes before I would have been drafted into the army.

The singular advantage to being drafted was that it was a two year stint as opposed to three and four years for enlisted persons.
