1- yes the frame lines were illuminated.

2- yes the shutter speed was shown

3- at the subway I was taking a candid photo in Tokyo.. the camera was set to ten minutes power saving. I half pressed the shutter and the camera woke up and took the photo.. after a minute I wanted to take another one but there were no shutter sound and no photo was saved.. I restarted the camera making off and on then everything was ok.. this is not the first time.. it happened three or four times in last 3 months ..

might not be as helpful, but since 1.5 i have disabled standby mode and it somehow helped with the freezes as i notice the the freeze I experienced was frm wake up

however, i have now set to 30min though i probably would turn it off altogether

However, I think the challenge of the internet now is that it appears to me that there has been a deliberate attempt to cloud the M11's launch with high degree of malevolence,

By whom and for what reason?

That’s quite some aspersion to cast without more information to support it.

That sounds like something I've had two or three times, too. If it is indeed the same, Leica knows about it.

How can I report it to Leica?

Would you like to use the FOTOS APP? The app has a customer service feature that can send reports to Leica, and it also attaches your M11 logs file which will be sent to Leica.

If anyone has another way of reporting to Leica, it would be appreciated for your share.

Here are the steps for accessing the customer service feature on the app.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got a new M11 to try my luck again. First M11 had a poorly calibrated rangefinder, second one had lockups. I’ve waited about 6 months to see if things have improved.

I’m not getting random lockups this time, but there is a repeatable way to make it lockup that I avoid. The camera will refuse to wake from standby with a non-Leica lens and an M lens profile selected. It will wake fine from standby with lens detection off. I will report this to Leica.

Until there is a firmware fix, for now my choices are:

1. Turn off lens detection or

2. Turn off standby mode

i dont use my uncoded lens much on my m11, but definitely i left the standby mode off.. or at least 30 min since last firmware that i never have the chance to put it to sleep only to wake it up during that 30 minutes lol.. so far so good

Why not hand coding your lens? It should have a recessed area on the flange if it not an early CV or ZM lens. Just asking as my only uncoded lenses are those i cannot hand code for lack of this recessed area (old Leica's, Minolta's, Konica's).

Can you tell us what your freeze behavior is? Is it only the shutter that doesn't work? Do you see frame lines in the OVF? Does clicking on menu works (before you attempt to press the shutter)? Does it freeze only when waking up from standby or also when you turn it on?

I also used (third-party) uncoded lenses with Lens Detection set to Manual M. The freezing behavior I have is: no frame lines are illuminated in the viewfinder, no shutter speed info (if shutter speed is set to auto, or no exposition info if manual). Clicking on Menu works, and I can navigate. But clicking the shutter doesn't do anything. And if I open live view, a black image is shown (with the capture assistants visible) and everything is frozen. When this happens, sometimes Lens Detection in the quick menu shows "No Lens"

I have the Voigtlander 50mm APO-Lanthar and the 28mm f/2 Ultron type II and neither has a recessed area on the frange... Both purchased new a few months ago.

Strange indeed. All my late CV lenses have a recessed area like this (Ultron 28/2 asph v2).

Oh I see. I was expecting a bigger recess area and only at the right location, not all around. Then maybe yeah I'll try coding my lenses (didn't want to buy a flange and changing it). Could you give me some resources on what paint to use and which code locator thing to print and use? There are many resources out there but wanted to use yours since you had a lot of experience with coding lenses.

Mine will show the frame lines but no shutter speed / red digits in the rangefinder. Clicking the shutter does nothing. Didn’t try the menu button during the freezes.

The above would happen always if waking from standby but also occasionally just when starting the camera cold after having turned it off, and it had been off a while. I further freeze-proofed it by using airplane mode and changing the display to LCD only (I don’t use/own the Visoflex 2). I don’t know which of those helped. Also strange to me that with airplane mode selected I still see the Wi-Fi icon at the top of the display bars on the LCD — I would think it should have a line through it like the location icon does when it’s disabled.

I have one CV and two LLL M lenses at the moment. I’ll have to check the LLL lenses, but I’m thinking they won’t have the recessed areas since they are reproductions of classic lenses.
