Well, the M 4-2 only had frames in the viewfinder for 4 different focal lengths, the M4-P had six - like the "old" M6 (not counting the versions with different rangefinder magnification), the MP (not counting "Á-la-Carte"-versions) and the "new" M6. I am not sure if the M4-2 and M4-P already had the - downgraded - viewfinder of the M6 which had no coated optical elements like the MP, though you already could upgrade an "old" M6-viewfinder to MP-level already.. So it's nothing new since the MP. I am rather sure, you could take pictures with the MP already.

Framelines, coated Viewfinder... ok. Details. But no real new design in my opinion. And that is the big difference between the M4 and the M4-2 and it´s successors.

Not getting one although Leica have sent me an invoice for it already. Will need to call and cancel

Already got the original vintage M6 Leitz in super mint condition, original box, all the bits. Plus another silver M6 plus M3 and M4. So getting this one won’t add much to the collection.

Would have only got the new one if it was glossy black paint. Or if it was a limited edition

Well, my M6 serial number indicates it was in the first batch of 2000 produced by Leica for sale in '84.  I figure that if I continue to want to shoot film, it deserves a nice (re) retirement in its original box.  I never thought of buying another film camera since the M6 was my favorite film camera of all time.  But now I'm happy it can be replaced by a brand new "same thing" (pretty much).

I hope the new one will be as tough as the old one.  My M6 has never had any sort of service and still works perfectly!  Kudos to Leica! :)

Reintroducing the M6 is a good move by Leica.  There are now three M Film cameras that customers can purchase new.  The M6 and MP seem to differ in only 4 areas.  The M6 is only available in Black with the Leitz Red Dot and contains the wind lever and rewind knob dating to the M4.  The MP is available in Chrome or Black with the wind lever and rewind knob dating to the M3 / M2.  In my opinion, neither camera is better than the other but buyers have a choice as to which they prefer.  And of course there is the M-A - no meter, no electronics. So, three choices and all are good depending on your wants and needs.

Browsing the usual US dealers and also eBay for late used M7’s the ones for sale are mostly pre MP finder 288xxxx serial numbers and very little post 288xxxx and hardly ever any in the 3 or 4xxxxxx range. I saw one in the late threes while browsing UK dealers recently but hesitated with some regret. Snoozed and lost!

There can't be very many 4xxxxxx M7s out there - Mine is a late 3xxxxxx and was ordered shortly before the a la carte program ended.

Let me guess, is it 3009...? It seems like the a la cartes all had a 3009 serial number. They probably just reserved a block of serial numbers for the a la carte cameras but I'm not sure that necessarily means that a 3009xxx a la carte M7 was produced later than a 288xxxx.

You're right it is in that range! I didn't know that about the alc serial numbers...

Apart from the M5 and the M7, pretty much all the other Ms, new or old, are the same thing.  With minor detail differences.  Buying a new M basically means you are buying an M, same as the old M.  But you can get it new!

The greatest trick Leica Marketing Department pulled in 2022 was starting a rumor about their latest film cameras possibly becoming irrepairable to sell the newest one to panicked folks.

They must have forgotten how, when the MP was rolled out, Leica said it would keep the parts available for “fifty years”.

I bought my second-hand  mint 2007 M7 (3999xxx) at a reasonable price about 8 years ago.  Fabulous camera. Even then it took 4-6 months to find a pristine late production unit.  I don’t think that M7 owners are in a hurry to sell their cameras as there’s no newer AE M-mount film camera with which to replace it.

Good luck with your search.

Leica, please also bring out a new M7.

Leica Marketing did not start that rumor. The rumor started here. Not even a rumor really...just fear and loathing precipitating from misunderstanding or misinterpretation or wild extrapolation of what Leica Marketing actually did say.

For all of you (us) lucky folks who also speak German, here is the official M6 presentation from Wetzlar, out today on the tube, fresh as the freshest Kaisersemmel from Aldi.

One hour, 14 minutes?  Who has the time?  I'm meant to be working over here!

p.s interesting selection of films on display with the camera.  Nuttin' from the big players...

p.s. check how he loads the camera!  The extremely easy Leica way!  Not the stoopid you-tubers way who don't pay attention to the very basic instructions...
