All in all a great little lens but just too plain (meaning lacking character) for me. That role is solely 35 ASPH cron's

Considering price, size, weight, and IQ, is character so important? You can always add character with your style of shooting B)

Like you, I own and use the 35 Cron Asph v1 and super love it. Do you think they share some similarities? Except, of course, aesthetics and build.

I’m lucky to own (and use) a few 35’s (w/ different character B)) and render, and I believe this new 35/1.5 wouldn’t fit in the family. I don’t buy just for GAS…

What I am looking for in my "one to rule them all" 35mm lens:

- Character wide open but not as much as pre-asph/steel rim
- Lack of CA or minimal CA like on this 35mm/1.5 Voigt
- f/1.4
- Close focus
- Tiny

Mmm… 🤔

Or 35FLE V2 or maybe f2…. So many requirements for the perfect 35

I was looking at this lens as an addition to my other 35mm lenses but now with reviews and examples rolling in I think I'll skip it or at least wait for more reviews. It looks like a solid lens but there are a few small things I don't like and they do add up.

Wide open shot with the new 35/1.5 II black paint brass lens on M10-P Reporter.

Thanks for showing the coma wide open. Did you perchance try the same shot at f2.0? The Nokton 35 f1.4 II has similar coma wide open, but is much reduced at f2.0 and hard to detect by 2.4. Of course my Summarit 35 2.5 is cleaner wide open, but I do like the rendering of these VC lenses in most dim light.

Maybe these can help to get a feeling for the distortion / vignette. The one with the car (distortion example) is shot on f5.6 and the "tree" shot is f2.8, the other ones are on f1.5 (vignette example). They are all edited (colors) but not corrected (vignette / distortion) and shot on the Leica M10.

And as mentioned before, the whole lens rendering / the files remind me a lot of my previously owned Distagon (high contrast, sharp, micro contrasts, vignette, colors).

Earlier in the thread there were a few mentions of similarities to the Distagon and SummFLE but after seeing the photo in post #161 with all that coma/aberration, and others that show the slight softness at certain settings, I fail to see how this lens comes anywhere close to the Zeiss and Leica lens. Maybe just in the center?
What do you all think?

I was waiting to see results from this. I got a 35 Summilux v2 instead.

Me too. How do you like Summilux v2? My copy is "enough" sharp @1.7 and very sharp > @F2.8. Rendering and colors are great.

I don't understand this comment.

Isn't the reason to buy a lens at a premium of 5x+ over an equivalent CV is to be absolutely satisfied with it's performance at 1.4?

35mm is not my prefered focal length. Usually I use Cron 28 and Lux ASPH combo.

I was thinking to add a 35mm lens in order to experiement with this focal length (part of 2023 New Year's resolutions). My first idea was to buy 35mm Cron v3 (can be find in Europe for around 1500 EUR). I happened to find a used Summilux pre ASPH for very low price so decided to try it. I read in other threads that Lux pre ASPH is from @2.8 to @5.6 very similar to Summicron. So I pulled the triger.

Just to be clear: My copy of Lux pre ASPH was ~40% more expensive comparing to new Nokton 1.5. So very far from 5x+ you mentioned in your post. And so far I'm very happy with the lens. @F1.7 there is no glow. BW rendering is great, colors are, IMHO and just by comparing to Nokton's online samples , more organic/subtle. But again I don't posess Nokton myself so please don't start with complaints about my nonconsistent opinion... 🙂 Just IMHO.

p.s. I saw Cosina released Ultron 75mm F1.9. I hope it is a great lens because I really wish to add a new, small, fast and reasonably priced 75mm lens to my collection.

Added a 39-46mm step ring as micro-lens hood along with a few 40mm O-rings to completely cover the bright chrome flange .

Do the o-rings introduce hard vignetting into the far corners, though?

Ah, I see, the O-rings are not spacing out the step ring, but were added, as a finishing touch, on the exterior to hide the bright chrome bayonet from all angles.

I get it now, thanks! I misinterpreted the photo.

Interesting review of the lens here, including the special 'black nose' edition 😉

If you're going to do a review, don't be lazy and shoot only a handful of sample images. "I didn't feel it gave me anything special so I kept it put away the entire trip". OMG. Force yourself to shoot with it, at least for our benefit :)

Looking at the review, the lens size is really ideal though. While I love the lux 35 asph, I just can’t deal with its weight / length for a 35mm lens..even the new cron is too big. Pre-asph leicas had the perfect size, and it seems voigtlander can do asph designs while keeping small bodies, wished Leica would do the same : )

For a one lens 35 kit, this would make a good option.
