Hi Tim,

I know this is the response a few Leica shooters received from Leica in regards to this but I don't think Leica understood the enquiry.

Yes, the optical design yields high vignetting and that's something they emulated from the classic. However, what's been discussed is something different: The use of a filter in between the lens and included rounded hood (12486) causes "hard" vignetting. How bad? It depends on the thickness of the filter but even the slimmest filters cause the issue. It's not just regular vignetting, it's 'hard' vignetting which is pure black and unrecoverable unless cropping the image.

In my previous email, I sent you links demonstrating this. Please ask the Leica product development to replicate this test so they can see the issue and offer a solution for us.

Thank you for doing this, Fred! Tim is the same guy I’ve spoken to. It’s very much a canned answer and it’s frustrating.

IIRC, Leica said they designed the new OOLUX to hard vignette like the original. They'll likely just say the round hood hard vignettes less. I don't think they ever said the round hood was not supposed to cause vignetting, that was reviewers saying things like, "...fortunately, Leica also provides a round hood...".

Leica will sometimes accommodate if they can, for example splitting the 50 Lux BC hood into two pieces and added a new screw-in piece to it. But I think in this case, they would have to design a completely new hood. It would be nice if they did, but I can't seem them doing that.

Could you share a link where Leica said they designed the new OLLUX to hard vignette?

To be clear, the included hoods do not introduce additional vignetting. Only when one adds a filter to the equation (specifically in between the lens and rounded hood) , "hard" vignetting becomes noticeable, especially for subjects focused at long distance. Therefore this is a design flaw and not a copy from the original. If they really wanted to stay true to the original design, they would have kept the 41mm thread and the ability to use a filter even with the OLLUX hood. At first glance, the 12486 rounded hood seemed more practical since it can be attached to a filter but the side effect is hard vignetting, which apparently was overlooked by the product design team.

Many photographers use color filters (B&W photography), ND filters and also protect their lenses against the elements when needed, so having a pure 100% black at the very corners is not part of the lens character as they are trying to convey with their answer to this issue.

My mistake – not hard vignetting with the OLLUX remake, just vignetting as per the original OLLUX.

From @jonoslack's review:

Quote

It comes with 2 different lens hoods; The original Ollux remade, and a round screw in hood. Leica have retained the 'fall off' characteristics of the original Ollux, so the screw in shade is very welcome! Unlike the original lens the remake has a 46mm screw thread for attaching filters, the round shade screws into this, and retains a thread inside, so you can attach filters with either shade (or with no shade).

@Overgaardany chance you are working on a new hood to fix this steel rim remake problem? The Leica screw in hood definitely causes hard vignetting with filters. It would be great to have a screw in hood with front threads (and no hard vignetting). I think you did something like this with your Summaron 28 hood?

My copy has the same building quality issues。 Please update when Leica germany respond about the situation。

So I got a response, and I’m not sure y’all will like it:

"The vignetting and the movable aperture adjustment ring are deliberate. The goal was to make a replica of the 1961 lens on which the vignetting and the "loose" aperture ring were present. It is due to the design and this we wanted to achieve again."

I didn’t even ask about a loose aperture ring. So, my guess is a LOT of people are asking this question.

So anyone that doesn’t have a wobbly aperture ring should be worried and send the lens back to Leica so that they can “fix” it.

Mine is wobbly so I’m good. 😀

Jeepers. The fact that’s a statement is just so strange, and that’s no criticism to you. I really, really want to love this lens. But I may just stick with my 28 Elmarit or upgrade to the Summicron.

Great, keep posting photos here.. I just switched from M10-R to M-A, and put a roll of Tri-X in the camera, going to Milano/Bergamo next week.. hope I'll manage to shoot at least a roll although it is a business trip (where I usually manage to take 2 photos in 1 week :)).

SR reissue on M10-R at f1.4

I emailed Leica a few days ago.

I specifically explained that it was not vignetting due to light falloff but encroachment of the hood onto the corner of the image when a filter is fitted. Still awaiting a response but I did send it on a Friday.

Exactly.

The reply from Leica is disingenuous at worst. Ignorant at best.

I’m currently on holidays in remote areas of costal Victoria (Australia).  Took the 35 SR with me. Fabulous general purpose lens when used at 2.0 or less.

However, these areas are exactly where I need a filter AND a hood for protection and flare.  Filter used but no hood. Really pissed me off 😠.

Fortunately I did bring alternate lenses.
