I guess:

(1) The meter can still be serviced.

(2) No risk of zinc bubbles.

(3) Less risk of patch flare.

(4) You have money to burn!

I'd say it is a 'genuine' M6 despite the 'MP' innards. After all, the TTL is still an M6, and so are the variants with brass top plates like the M6J and the Titan, as well as the exotic special editions, etc. And what is an MP after all, if not a refined M6 with some retro furniture?

Read a few posts up the link to what Jono said. It's not MP internals. It's an all new camera. They did this to avoid the supply constraints of the circuit boards and many internals that are now all insourced.

This new M6 and the variants based on it that may follow will have the longest serviceable meters of all Leica film cameras.

It's not really a MP. Confirmed by Jono it's a new camera. Lots of new parts. Different light meter circuit board, mechanicals, etc.

In that case, maybe future MPs won't be the same as the originals? It would be easy enough to swap out the wind & rewind and label this camera 'MP'. The changes between the Classic and TTL were pretty substantial, but both were engraved 'M6'. Might we end up debating the relative merits of different generations of the MP?

While they were redesigning the circuit board, I wonder if they took the time to make one (not necessarily the one in this camera) compatible with the original M6 Classic? Someone who visited Wetzlar a few months ago claimed that Leica had said they were working on a solution to the lack of replacement circuit boards for the M6 (and also that they had made brass replacement top plates for cameras with serious zinc problems).

My last post crossed with yours. I hope they are thinking long-term about the electronics, and will consider supporting older cameras too (as above).

That would be nice. Jono doesn't think the new M6 circuit board will be compatible with the old M6. But like you said, Leica may have another solution for the old M6 meters in the works.

Good interview. Andrea Pacella with Leica comments on the making money thing – to the effect of: there are a lot of ways we could make money with a new product, but a hand-built film camera is not one of them – we do this as a statement, a commitment.

I guess Leica could have made a new camera looking like an MP with the new internal parts instead of one looking like an M6 classic. But apparently they thought that the M6 would sell better. After all, for someone new to Leica wanting to buy a new film M (and could afford it) the M6 look makes perfect sense. It looks just like the hyped "iconic M6" when the MP looks, well, just like an MP. And with the large LEICA M6 engraving on the front also people not very familiar with Leicas will realise that you have one.

I think all the MP guys just have to face it - the M6 is now the cool camera! 🙂

I am not trying to shoot down your love of the M6, I used to like them a lot, when they were 1500-2000$.   When they crept up past 3000$, they because harder to justify over an MP.  I still dont fully understand the reasoning for this camera at this price point, but im done posting for now

Oh no, I am not buying a $5000+ film camera either.  I owned an M6 a long time ago in the 90s and it was $1000.  I was also developing my own film and printing color and B&W.  It was worth it then.  Now, I am a digital M user (among other digital cameras) and actually prefer digital.  I was just giving some reasons why people might like this camera more.  And yes, I agree... it will sell simply because it is the latest new Leica.  The price I agree with you on, but I also understand they are not going to price it lower when they do not need to.

Well for me, the MP is still a better camera. The M6 has a piece of plastic on the lever and the angled rewind knob that was always a problem i.e. breaking off. The red dot is a giveaway to anybody who may wish to steal your camera. The only thing I like on the M6 is the screw less pressure plate which Leica fitted for me ten years ago. I will be keeping my MP.

I think Dr.K bought it a couple of years back

He bought the right to use the brand name "Ernst Leitz" and its components. It is used for the "Leitz Park", the Hotel at the Leitz Park and for Cine Prime lenses and now as well for some photographic gear.

Now we have a mostly new film body designed to deal with supply issues as well as environmental concerns. The simple fact they continue to make a film camera should be applauded regardless if you like the reissue or not. If the idea behind this camera was to ease production problems, then get moving! There's a lot more than five hundred buyers who want one.

My M4 has a piece of plastic on the rewind and in the self timer and frame selector. They've been there since 1967.

If someone knows Leica enough to know they are valuable to steal, they are surely going to recognize the camera with or without the red dot.
