I recently learned the 3 stores in Miami, SOHO (NY) and San Francisco are all privately owned stores; the remaining US Leica stores are company owned. As a result their websites and store sponsored activities are separate from the other Leica stores. I found that out last year... Corporate stores have everything. i've never been shortchanged or given a bum steer at a non corporate store.

But I think you may be missing the point of why Leica makes limited edition cameras of questionable taste (not to mention luxury watches and expensively rebadged Instax cameras) in the first place. They are more niche marketing opportunities than they are celebrations of remarkable individuals, and Leica know their market, which is why they are 'honouring' Seal and Lenny Kravitz rather than (say) FKA twigs, Carolyn Bertozzi or Lynsey Addario. I'd rather they remembered Gerda Taro with a photography award like the Robert Capa medal rather than an overpriced trinket that will never leave its display case. They do at least do this: https://leica-camera.com/en-US/leica-women-foto-project It just seems disingenuous that when it actually comes down to putting name on product, they apparently won’t do it. Leica should not only talk the talk but also walk the walk.

I mean, seriously, honouring Seal or Lenny does not give you “street cred”, except maybe in the eyes of fifty year old dentists. So, why would you not rather honour any of the great female photographers? There really is no cure for these douchebaggery attempts at make Leica rock roll. The music special editions are essentially what's hanging around Herr Kaufmann's cd player: Lenny Kravitz, The Police, Seal, and when he feels like going a little bit crazy, the Motley Crue! (let's never forget the truly execrable Nikki Six Q edition). It's pretty sad... 4

Stevie Nicks shot a whole series of in the middle o the night Polaroids from her heyday. Leica could have created a Nicks Sofort. But no, I guess Leica doesn’t recognize female pioneers. how about Patti Smith? (the Robert Mapplethorpe connection)

Noctinoir Posted October 13, 2022 Share #690 Posted October 13, 2022 I would put my hand up if it was a black paint M6 re-issue. Already have a silver M6 Classic as well as a black ‘Leitz’ M6 Classic so no point getting the ‘new’ one unless it has some unique lasting attribute. Also heard through the grapevine that someone that knows someone that knows someone who’s brother’s uncle has been given a new Noctilux f/1.0 to test? Hmmmm, anyone else heard anything? As a matter of interest can we see a list of names of 'any of the great' male photographers (as opposed to musicians / designers / actors etc.) after whom an M-Leica edition has been named? I can only think of two; Jim Marshall and Ralph Gibson. As it happens with Mr. Marshall there really IS a link between Leica and Rock'n'Roll... They got quite close with the original M Monochrom, of course, but changed their mind quite late in the day. So how about it; any other names?............ Philip. Not quite sure if I get your meaning here, but why would you need to link Leica to Rock’n’Roll in the first place? Wouldn’t you indeed first want to start with photographers, whether male or female (assumed)?

Wouldn’t you indeed first want to start with photographers, whether male or female (assumed)? I don't need a link to Rock'n'Roll at all; I merely mentioned the connection because of a remark you made in the post I quoted. Nothing more complicated than that. Yes; a link to actual Photographers - regardless of how they identify in terms of their gender - would be more relevant (IMO) than with anyone connected to photography in a 'secondary role'. I'm trying to think of any world-famous non-male photographer who was / is known, predominantly, for using Leica rangefinder cameras. Inge Morath certainly used M3 / M4 / M6 cameras quite often. Leni Riefenstahl used various 'Barnacks' as well as M2 / M3 cameras but the majority of female photographers whose names spring to my mind either used, in the main, 35mm SLRs; a Rolleiflex; a Hasselblad or something larger-format. Philip. I already mentioned Catherine Leroy. She went to Vietnam on her own dime with her M2. But this isn't even about having to be a famous photographer. Leica just hasn't given ANY women, photographers or not, a limited edition camera. They have no problem creating them for men though. 1
BradS Posted October 13, 2022 Share #699 Posted October 13, 2022 (edited) It is an error to think of the recent celebrity special editions as honoring the celebrity. It's not an honor. It's a business arrangement. Same as the business arrangement between Nike and Michael Jordan. It is mutually agreed upon exploitation. Female pioneers. They choose not to. It’s not like they’ve run out of female candidates and then had to resort to B list musicians. They haven’t picked a single woman, ever.
