JaapV:

To be there is to feel the emotion, and to feel the emotion is to be able to impart the darkness to others; so, hopefully no one forgets so it does not happen again.

I don't know whether you'd seen "Saving Private Ryan", but there's a scene there where Tom Hanks is challenged by one of his men for freeing a German soldier who has been captured after an exchange in which some of Hanks' men were killed. Rather than execute him on the spot, Hanks' character blindfolds him, disarms him, and tells him to walk towards the American lines and turn himself in. One of his men is irate about the decision.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

The dialogue between Hanks and his men follows:

Captain Miller: Back home when I tell people what I do for a living, they think, well, that, that figures. But over here its a big, a big mystery. So I guess I've changed some. Sometimes I wonder if I've changed so much my wife is even gonna to recognize me whenever it is I get back to her -- and how I'll ever be able to tell her about days like today.

Ryan -- I don't know anything about Ryan. I don't care. Man means nothin' to me. It's just a name. But if -- you know -- if going to Ramel and finding him so he can go home, if that earns me the right to get back to my wife -- well, then, then that's my mission.

You wanna leave? You wanna go off and fight the war? Alright. Alright, I won't stop you. I'll even put in the paperwork. I just know that every man I kill the farther away from home I feel.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

To make a long story short: I've lead a very fortunate and comfortable life, but sometimes complacency and comfort is best shaken to be reminded about trying to make the world a better place by not forgetting the evils. To try to understand the incomprehensible, to try to forgive, and to try to make certain that by remembering and feeling 'we' hopefully do not allow these horrors to re-occur.

One of many extraordinary scenes in the movie. Here's the link on youtube:

I hope you'll have the time in Poland to explore other less 'serious' sites.  Krakow old town is amazing!  A day trip to the salt mines (whos name escapes me right now) is quite the experience and will help you recover from Aushwitz afterwards.

What an interesting find and subject - did it get pulled from the river?  Anyhow, welcome to the Leica world, it can become addictive ( and expensive).

Thanks and yes probably expensive but hey you only live once!

That bike is a rental bike and got pulled out the of the river indeed.

But that reminds me of a question that I have:

Any 3rd party adaptors people can recommend for Voigtlander lenses, instead of the Leica M adaptor (AUD $550)? I'm totally new to the adaptor world so a bit of help would go a long way ;-)

It is also the home of this iguana that I cross by from time to time.

Actually, there may even be a family iguana living there as they do not look exactly the same each time!  ;)

Me, too.  It was the first space that I saw when arriving at the place.  I don't usually shoot other people's pictures, but I got an explanation of the family members who appear in those two, and I like the cat (which is in other paintings as well), so I couldn't resist.

Trying to find that Leica Look with my first ever Leica camera:

CL - 18mm

Feel free to comment, tips & tricks welcome of course.

Welcome, I'm pretty new here too and I'm also a Melbourne girl though I left in 1981 and have only been back for visits since.

You were asking about adaptors, I've just bought a Voigtlander M mount for use on the CL and the Leica adaptor. Yes it's expensive but perfect and solidly made with no wobbling or connection issues. I have read some posts here that suggest the cheaper ones aren't that great in terms of build quality so I bit the bullet and decided I'd only pay once, even if I had to pay more.

Ha ha - imagine missing that game and I don't even follow the football!! He certainly doesn't look happy. I like these very much. Any chance of seeing the first in colour?

It was very quiet on my "streets" yesterday afternoon, think everyone was home watching the football, and those that weren't didn't look too happy about it.

Thanks Dippy, I think if you click on the image it will take you to my flickr page - one image back from the b&w is the colour version which is the original un-cropped version.

I'm no follower of the football either but it's hard not to get caught up in world cup fever in the UK at the moment - goooooo England!!

They're often fine on quality, but lack in functionality.

Hi,

I am using that adaptor for its helicoid augmenting the close focussing range :

https://www.hawksfactory.tw/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=58

yet  if you want to use the right thumb wheel as a magnifier, from my experience , you only can with the original coded Leica adaptor .

Best, JM.

When the adapter like this one or a Novoflex don't have any electrical connection with the camera, the magnification with the top wheel doesn't work. But fortunately, you can still magnify with the arrow on the back of the camera. I am using manual Nikkor lenses via Novoflex and this is how I am magnifying to focus manually.

BTW, check with Novoflex to see if they have any adapter for your lenses.

this view is from the Ossetian border.  You probably have to click through to Flickr to see it at any scale:

Scott:

Great photos! These look very similar to an area I was in a couple of weeks ago in Inner Mongolia; related areas somewhat I suppose (including the horses, which were raised for the table).
