Good day all. I've searched this area but not found a reference so my apologies in advance if this has been addressed.

Looking to extend the reach of my SL2. Considering the Sigma 100mm-400mm due to price and my previous experience with Sigma glass when I shot on the Sony system. Does anyone have any feedback regarding how well it integrates on the SL2? I'm particularly interested in the auto focus capabilities.

Many thanks.

Ken

The Sigma 150-600 dg DN is the better lens. I would recommend it. More expensive but also better quality.

AF speed is slower than the SL 90-280. But still good enough for such a long lens. You can find many examples in the photo threads.

The Sigma 100-400 has supposedly had some software updates which have significantly improved its performance.  It is also much more nimble to use than the Sigma 150-600 and is a bit less costly.

The Sigma 100-400 is phenomenal.  Fast AF and the new eye-detect focus works extremely well.  With its OIS and the IBIS of my SL2s, I nailed handheld images at a water polo tournament without problems.

I think when it was first released people had some issues at medium to longer distances and also stabilisation as referred to above, so it took a bit of hit reputation wise on the L Mount.

However, that's all been sorted via a firmware update and now it's a great option for something lighter than the 150-600 with better reach than the 90-280.

I am a retired Sports Photographer, covered such as five Olympics and hundreds of F1 and Motorcycle GP races and now use a SL though not a SL2 (Sorry) along with what I regard as a superb Sigma 100 -400. Though long retired I still like to keep my hand in so often use this lens and camera combination to cover such as local Rugby and football matches, and as such can confirm the Sigma firmware update made a massive improvement in every area.

Any AF slowness or limitation now is in my view down to the camera and not the lens BUT I still find it and my SL's autofocus more than good enough for most subjects and hence if the AF speed has been significantly improved on the SL2 and or SL2S then I am very sure you would be more than happy with the Sigma 100-400, and incidentally I also rate it as being sharper than my Canon 100-400mm L Lens, AND the Sigma is very much lighter. Don.

I see the results others get with their Sigma 100-400, and they look great. My copy of the lens really struggled with consistently producing sharp images. It seemed to me that some lens's had the issue and some didn't. If it's truly been fixed, then it's a great choice. The 150-600 has been fantastic but too large for every adventure, so I picked up the Panasonic 70-300.

With the 150-600, OIS and IBIS on the SL2 do not work together. Is the different with the 100-400?

Is that an issue? IBIS works best with wide angle lenses, and OIS works best with long lenses. There's some overlap in the middle, but I wouldn't think that a super-tele would benefit much, if at all, from IBIS.

Not for me. I was just under the impression that Leica IBIS works together Leica OIS but not with Sigma OIS.

How does the Lumix 70-300 optically compare to the Sigma 100-400?

Panasonic has some cameras that benefit from the combination. I have a Panasonic GZ8 with a Leica 100-400 ( 800 equ.) that allows me to shoot @ 800 with 1/100th freehand. 5 axis 5 EV stabilization with IOS and IBIS working in tandem.

I’m not a a long lens photographer, my stuff has always been weddings, events, documentary and street. On a recent trip to New England from the UK, I bought the Sigma 100-400 specifically for whale watching and promising myself that I’d use it to broaden my horizons a bit - improve my broader photography. This is one of the first frames I took with it on my SL2-S; cropped and taken on a heavily pitching-rolling boat. I’m no expert on long/zoom lenses, but I’m very happy with it.

When the Sigma hit focus it was fairly sharp, but I’d give a very slight edge to the Panasonic. The Panasonic renders colors differently as well.
