No strap lugs protection on Leica M10 or M11 - Aluminum plate on m11 - Why?

I was looking for a used M10 or M10P and noticed that they have no strap lugs protection on them. Most of the M10s I looked at had ugly strap lugs wear on them with either on the chrome or black finish.

Aluminum plate on M11 ? I prefer the more expensive brass plate for the money I spent on Leicas.

Both of my M240p and M246 monochrom have strap lugs protection on them .

Both problems can be readily solved: many camera straps offer some leather camera body protection around the lugs. The silver M11 still has a brass plate.

Yes i wonder why there are no strap lug protections on the M11. They are very useful on my M8.2 and M240 and much less ugly (to me) that those camera straps with leather protection that i don't like at all. Kind of detail giving me the feeling to use a precious toy instead of an effective tool.

For me, it's the other way around: strap lug protectors give me that feeling. Whatever Leica does, they can't please everyone.

The plastic protectors were integral to the top plate, not glued on, and were presumably removed from the M10 (and M11) to improve weather sealing.

There are numerous discussions on alternative solutions to avoid rub marks from straps on these later models. I, for instance, add small round leather ‘donuts’ around the lugs, under the Leica 14312 straps that I use on my M10-R and M10 Monochrom.

I must have a couple 14312 straps in some drawer but i don't like their plastic pad. I wonder which of my legacy straps has the least chance to produce rub marks on the M11: 14092 for M3 (leather) or 14226 for M4-2 (leather+nylon)? Hard to imagine leather protectors or donuts around such beauties... But it's just me i guess. I did not care in my youth so i must be going gaga :D.

The small leather donuts are barely visible. I like the 14312 straps on all my M bodies, especially the flexible and grippy shoulder pad…not plastic..  (never use as a neck strap). Different strokes…

Same here, I much prefer the newer (or much older..) cameras without protectors.

Hah - I bought one of these used around 1981 to use on an early-edition Nikon F. (Great-feeling strap!)

The "coathanger" steel attachment hooks carved right into the F's chromed-brass lug-holes, and wore them down to almost paper thinness before I noticed. Had to go to Nikon for replacements. When it came back, I noticed the new Nikon lugs were now steel-lined.

As to the original question - I used the straps that came with my M10s originally. But the folded-leatherette rub protectors wore right through after 3 years and came apart, and one of them actually caught in the O-Ring and pried it open enough to slide off the lug.

CRASH! onto concrete.

Fortunately, my 75 Nokton f/1.5 took most of the impact (and kept on ticking) - no camera damage at all.

Now I use 14312s like Jeff - and if I get little new-moon rub marks on the M10s, well, that just means they match my 1962 M2 and my original M4-2. ;)

Apparently Leica started to fit strap lug protectors on the top plate with the M6, at the same time as they introduced the nylon strap that has the plastic "things" that lock the lug rings in place. Both that strap and the lug protectors disappeared after the M240. I guess their design department decided that these were not retro-looking enough, or something...

Personally I do not find the lug protectors ugly, at least not on a black body, but opinions differ. But I don't think it would have been impossible to attach them to the body in a way that does not let in the occasional droplet of water.

Here is the perfect example of Leica M10 P for sale in one of the Leica stores in the US. Do I want to pay over $6000 for this crap?

You don’t have to pay for it. Move on to another brand if it doesn’t suit you.  Nobody is holding a gun on you.

They are designed so that the metal ring will not come into contact with your M camera's top plate...

Ditto with Mac Jackson's McMurray & Blonde straps--simple yet solid and stylish.  I love these straps.  Pick the leather and stitching of your choice, and he follows up personally to confirm before making it from scratch.  Check him out at https://www.mcmurrayandblonde.com/ .

Here's the one I've used (in both black and brown).  The leather fold/attachment around the ring is thick enough to prevent metal-on-metal damage to the camera body.
