The rollei is one of the best lenses made for Leica too…love it but unfortunately don’t own it any longer…I use the 50mm frames to shoot a 40mm because I know it gives me a bit more than the frames say but that’s still ok, whereas the opposite (using 35mm frames) can cut some essential things that I was not expecting (and of course I can’t crop them back..but I can always crop unwanted things if needed). I also don’t think there’s a need to get an extra viewfinder for the 40mm frame lines, just using the 35 or 50 is close enough :)

I fully agree about the lens but I don’t really like shooting it with either 35 (for the same reason as you) nor 50 frame lines (find this too far off). I also like using external viewfinders quite a lot actually 😊

I am still wondering if this means that the mount contact surface is not machined metal, but black painted? This can't be right I hope 🤔

That is pretty cool:-)

Yen to dollar price is currently $615 (MSRP).

Cosina has become very good at making highly tempting products.

Are they brass barrel? I know the hood made of aluminum

if they are, I’m sold!

This a bit of a worry: it seems, for perhaps cost, the mount is machined from the body of the lens rather than being a separate part attached to the lens body.

A machining operation too take off any anodisation over the 6-bit code reader would perhaps solve the incompatibility.

If I were to buy an early production of this lens, the LTM version would be the one to go for to ensure a bright metal mount.

Its seems they simply rehoused the vm e lens with a helicod...

Surprising they went with the ltm than the SL/ TL mount. I would of loved a native SL mount version of this lens. Its always better to have native mount lenses than to put on an adapter. But it makes somewhat sense since its now common to combine modern lenses with film

I wished they adapted their 40 f2 for nikon sl mount to Leica. That lens is highly regarded.

Don't understand this. Leica 6 bit code is black and white. Newer VM lenses only need black paint in the groove as the bare metal would be considered white. Now I think we need to use white paint for the white areas and leave black as it is. Unless of course there is no groove.

Anyway for this lens, I would consider buying the LTM version and use it with a coded 6 bit LTM-M adapter.

Just arrived today. This lens is remarkable and it's a lovely pancake.

Voigtländer designed Heliar in 1900.  As you can see, the size of this lens is unbelievably tiny nowadays and it is powerful from my first-day impression.

I'm enjoying the 40mm 2.8 Rollei Sonnar on my M3, and should be getting the new CV any moment now! That one will go with my BP MP.

How do you find the angle of view with the M3 viewfinder?

Approximately 55 degrees for a 40mm lens, I think. 35mm is 63 degrees and 50mm about 46 degrees (so 52mm Leica standard should be approximately about 45 degrees).

No issues.   I use the entire VF and that works out fine i.e. outside the frame lines.

Just showed up, absolutely tiny lens, and the construction is exquisite.
