Survey: Would you buy an EVF only camera with an M mount?

473 members have voted

  1. 1. Should Leica make a manual focus EVF camera?

    • Absolutely. I'm second in line after Flash.
    • Never! It's the work of the Devil.
    • Hmmm? Not sure. I'd want to see it first.
    • I want one of each. M11 and this new wonder camera!
    • Not for me but I'd be happy if it exists.
    • Does it come in Monochrom?

Well, I suppose that depends on which "existing system" one means - and one's definition of "works perfectly well." ;)

Just because it may be possible to do something with electronics does not mean to say that it will be better.

With the advent of the A9lll global shutter sensor will make the idea of an M evf more plausible. No mechanical shutter means ibis can be implemented; no need to groan about shutter slap/noise.

+1. Question is would we see IBIS in the EVF-M if the M12 is lacking it itself. Little chance i suspect. I would be interested in neither camera then.

Isn't there some kind of haptic feedback, so you can "feel" that you're taking the picture?

With the Nikon Z8, you can choose a sound as is electronic shutter only already. So if you like stapler, just select it 😉

On a mirrorless camera with EVF you get feedback via blackout.

But on the M11, electronic shutter indeed feels as if nothing happens.

GS with IBIS would just be very helpful, especially for people getting older. Some of us do.

I think someone here said that with the M11 you can feel it in your finger when taking a picture with the electronic shutter.

I fell nothing when it switches ES. As a result often times I think it did not take the image.

I suspect down the road new advances will allow a small IBIS "cell" to be developed where Leica could implement it in an M especially if it has a space saving EVF. Assume the big challenge will be sensor positioning without making the overall body size larger than it is today. On the other hand could an M with built-in EVF have IBIS built into the EVF like the Viso2 has today. But that is only for focusing and not capture so then we are back to the beginning again.

Would I buy an EVF M like camera without IBIS? Will ponder that as I sure like the Viso2 EVF and also the SL EVF which has IBIS.

Pondering this further, it seems and M body for built-in EVF and IBIS will not be an M body.

One gets two kinds of feedback when taking a picture with the M11's electronic shutter, one blackout in LV mode, and three bright lines (— — —) in the OVF in both RF and LV mode. No tickle in the finger or anywhere else though :D

Very good comment. SO this means it is user error when not knowing if the image was captured. Makes sense.

No, you don't. No feeling, no sound. There is no camera with electronic shutter that provides a haptic feedback that I know of. Most can provide an indicator in the EVF and/or a sound but no feeling.

I suspect IBIS is a problem in an M camera, if you consider the thickness of the LCD, the sensor itself and then register distance from the rear lens element (at infinity), all in a camera the thickness of the M10?  Losing the mechanical shutter (heresy) in favour of a global shutter could free up space …

My preference would be either an LCD-less camera (very unlikely), or reverting to 40MP or even 36MP, with an EVF and mechanical shutter, and option of global shutter and no IBIS -  still some way off, I’d hazard.

I did not pay attention to that before. Indeed the shutter speed is shortly replaced by those three lines. Thanks for pointing to that.

Maybe if they made an M style body with EVF it could have some of these attributes and come with a lens to get one started?

  • 60-megapixel sensor (same as that in the M11) with BSI design for faster readout speeds and improved noise performance
  • Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH lens
  • Maestro IV processor
  • Various crop modes for longer focal length needs
  • Triple Resolution Technology, which allows for three different resolutions of output with better noise control
  • 8 GB of buffer memory
  • ISO range of 50-100,000
  • Continuous burst rate of 15 fps
  • Minimum focus distance of 6.7 inches
  • Hybrid autofocus sensor with subject recognition system
  • 8K video at up to 30 fps
  • 4K video at up to 60 fps
  • Full HD at up to 120 fps
  • ProRes 422 HQ recording
  • Micro-HDMI and USB-C ports
  • 5.76-million-dot OLED EVF with 0.79x magnification
  • Tilting touchscreen
  • Weather-sealed construction
  • Single SD slot
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Of course you'll all realise that apart from the fact the lens isn't a real summilux (although it is AF) this is a Q3 and it's considerably cheaper. Personally I'd settle for that minus the video if needed and interchangeable lenses instead as a swap, put the internal storage back in and crystal glass screen.

It just makes me wonder if it isn't exactly the same as the Porsche 911 pricing where it might have the same engine as a 718 4L GTS but cost 2/3 of the price as 'that's just the way it is'.

Just considering that next year it is the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the M series I could imagine it being the release date of an EVF parallel version of the M. If I was a crafty manufacturer I'd consider having an internal EVF version and a tradition RF version with IBIS to make purchasers chose/upgrade.

Of course the alternative is it's the first year of another 75 keeping the same single focus system!
