After almost 6 years being on SL system, which I absolutely love, I wanted something more compact from the Leica. I have Fuji X100F, which is also great camera, but I always wanted to try M system. I liked M forever, for their timelessness, but I always hesitated to try because the lack of autofocus and EVF, and the price point. Getting into the new system is freaking expensive. I started my photography journey with SL and I never used anything without autofocus or EVF (except occasionally shooting film on Rolleiflex). But I finally decided to give it a try. I just got it today, the battery is still charging for the first time and I'm very excited and think I'll love this system. I also got Summilux M 28mm, 1.4 lens as a starter.

So, this post is not just about sharing my enthusiasm and excitement, but I'd also like to hear any advices from the people who are using it for a while, and those who switched from SL or any other autofocus/EVF system. How was it? How long was the learning curve? Is this camera compact and light enough for a daily use?

I carry a digital M every day. Usually with only one lens (21, 28, 35, 50, 90) but will pack 50 if I’m wearing 21 or 90. EVF with the 21, spare battery and SD card in a Billingham Hadley small. Wear the bag with the strap across your chest and long enough so that with your arm straight down you can just slightly lift the bottom of the bag with your fingers to give your shoulder an occasional rest.

I visit the same places many times which is how I get away with only one lens.

Bear in mind you don’t focus a rangefinder camera, you measure the distance to your chosen point. The view in the finder is always in focus. Keep both eyes open. Adjusting the range to water is difficult.

(every day is a lie; I sometimes carry a bloody heavy SL2 with a bloody heavy SL lens)

I got quite a lot of vignetting shooting on 1.4 (which I don't dislike), but I tried to see if it's caused by the hood, which I cannot detach. I tried to unscrew it, but it didn't go off. I tried harder, but it won't come off. I also try to pull it out if it's spring loaded, but it won't move a hair. Am I doing something wrong? I see there's a screw at the bottom of the barrel, but that would be strange if it's a hood screw.

Build primarily a relation with your M, talk with him, not with us. In the nineties, when I started with M, I put my new M’s on my nightstand. To exchange our dreams.

I'm bringing her tomorrow for a brunch, and we'll have a talk 😄

These colors are just gorgeous straight out of the camera.. Similar to what I liked in the original SL, even better I would say. Then SL2 had something different about colors that I didn't like. Now when I'm comparing test shots I did today with M10-R and my SL photos, M feels more like a film. Not sure if it's colors, vignetting, or the sharpness, which is not as perfect as the SL (or rather, my lack of skill to focus razor sharp), but I like it.

Besides of my S3 (nearly sleeping) I prefer my M 10-R together with the new Apo-Summicron 35 mm more and more. It`s a real handy and excellent combination to take superb pictures as I like.

I think the lens hood is the typical one which screws a quarter of a turn anti clockwise and pulls off ... I dont know why its not moving for you. Anyway, leave it on until you get to your dealer and ask them.

No, it screws on a continuous thread, like a lens filter, but has a hard stop for alignment. All removable Leica lens hoods operate this way now. Removal is unscrewing anticlockwise.

Ok, I dared to push it really hard and I unscrewed it. Thanks for the advices.

You should try to borrow the older M9/M9P and although only 18MP,  the files are even more unique which may be to your liking.

Right, I’d say that the SL has more digital sharpness, which is far from perfect. Some people use the word hyperrealism for extreme sharpness, but in fact this hyperrealism is less real.

Now put it back on again and leave it. There’s no such thing as good photography without hoods

Three lens setup, all one needs.

Within a factor of 10, agreed:).  I still prefer the classic silver version, using one since it came out.  But the M9, Edition 60, all make great photos too, so M10-R is just a new choice of the Leica look palette.  I use it for low-light, hi-res needs (a concert in the evening from afar, eg as yesterday at the Cotati Accordion Festival).  I might prefer the M9 on a cloudy day to add punchier colors to reality.  Or a monochrom on a rainy day to forget about the poor colors altogether.

I've been shooting films for decades and  had DMR, M8, M9, monochrom CCD and an M240. Now I still have my film MPs and M240 and, thanks to this forum, I've bought an M10R.

I'm very happy with it and 'til today I haven't yet experienced the micro-blur due to 41 MP. Actually shots with 1/focal length times are perfectly sharp. Shutter is super super super silent...incredible!

I've used to leave my M240 in AUTO as lens recogniction and so I did with M10R as well but when I download DNG in lightroom I get R-Adapter-M on all pictures taken with non-coded lenses. I set and reset many times OFF, AUTO, MANUAL SELECTION and then again AUTO; I still obtain the latest manual selection in M or R menù. Is there a way to leave AUTO and not messing with in-camera profiles when not-coded lenses are mounted?

I use both systems. Super happy for the SL when it comes to work on projects when autofocus is needed. But me my fav setup is the M10-R with 28mm 1.4 It just work for almost everything. I really like that setup.

I love the black paint version. I didn't know there are two different black versions at the time purchased it. I got the other one and was a bit disappointed because there was no Leica lettering logo on the top, but the red dot at the front, but I decided to keep it anyway, instead return and exchange for the black paint. I'm now used to the chrome one, but I'd still prefer to have a black paint. It's more iconic.
