As a 90-280 owner, for me it's about the extra 320mm, not having to crop to fill the frame and still having 47mp. The trade-off is the slower speed.

In that case, it would make sense to acquire the lens docking unit for customise firmware download to increase the lens' AF accuracy while compromising speed.

Jaap, I couldn't agree more about useless tripods and gimbals 🙄

Here's a Pied Kingfisher image I took yesterday AM,  hand held with the SL2 & Canon 400mm f4 & 1.4x TC & MC-21 adapter, a fairly hefty piece of kit.

I'm expecting to receive the Sigma 105-600mm next week in SA.

No... no AFC with MC-21.. sorry for jumping in but I use Canon 100-400 II and converters with SL2 via MC-21, and no AFC, it's a well known gripe amongst users.

As Jayne said, you only get AFS with the Canon.

I received the Sigma 150-600mm L this morning. As many people have said here, it looks & feels like a very well built lens & sits comfortably on the SL2 & SL2-S.  I'm looking forward to testing it in the field.

I hope you will enjoy the lens. Although it is a non native Sigma lens and the Autofocus set up of CDAF in SL/2/S require contrast data from each lens to allow AFC to function, the Sig 150-600mm focus fast and accurately as the SL90-280mm amazingly. Hence allowing Leica SL/2/S users the comprehensive range of lenses covering from 14mm to 600mm.

The very competitive price point besides the merits of the Sig 150-600mm in optical, AF & Egonomics, let's take some time to evaluate and determine if indeed this lens is a jewel in the rough for us Leica users?

As this is my very first Sigma lens and I have been greeted by very pleasent surprise ever since the Sig 150-600mm landed in my possession, I am keen to look at it's other L-mount offerings that Leica does not produce.

SL2-S Sigma 150-600mm L @ 500mm - Initial impressions are that image quality & sharpness are outstanding, the transition from in-focus to out-of-focus areas is smooth. Another excellent lens from Sigma.

The Sigma 105mm DG DN Macro f/2.8 is also a very sharp, well built lens.

Yeah, Sigma 105mm 1.4, 105mm 2.8 macro, 85mm 1.4 & 14-24mm are lenses that gotten my attention on top of the 150-600mm. Like I've said, it is an extended pool of lenses that Leica does not make. With my positive experience on Sig 150-600mm, I will try out more Sigma lenses in time to come.

Very happy with the results. AF is fast and accurate, it even works smooth with tracking focus on the CL (the 100-400 did not!) The only downside: take plenty of batteries, this lens is power-hungry.

600 mm, AFC, tracking

Bokeh test @ 600

Not bad for a long multi-element zoom.

`Lovely image...  yes it does eat batteries, hardly surprising given everything that's going on on the small body of the CL, but it's a treat to use for sure.

You effectively have a 900mm reach on yr CL.

I had the similar experience of it going through the batteries faster than the SL90-280mm.

I'm using the vertical grip permanently attached onto my SL2, so there are two batteries to support my usage.

I really think the Sig 150-600mm is a steal considering that the great sharpness, resolution, contrast, well controlled CA and fully functional AF at native lens performance with respect to the price point. I'm more than happy to keep this lens along side my SL90-280mm especially on shooting BIF.

Thanks Jaap. Great sharpness, gentle transition into focus, but also tendency for double-line oof rendering of highlights/structures. I suspect the latter would be a main difference between a long prime and a long zoom (in addition to say f4 vs f6.3). My first choice is a prime, but clearly the focal range 150-600 is very, very convenient.

I've played around some more with the lens around the house today, first spring rains, the weather was not great for going out.

SL2 & 150-600mm - indoors hand held 430mm@ 1/20s - The SL2's IBIS & lens' OIS work well (please click for better res.)

I also tried the Sigma 1.4x TC on the lens. This Ibis was on the roof of my house in the shade, there's a certain amount of IQ loss, nothing that can't be tweaked in post.

SL2 & 150-600mm @ 600mm & 1.4x TC = 840mm (please click for better res.)
