More photo samples can be found here, from the authors of the ones mentioned before:

Near minimum focus and placement of specular highlights seem to be the trick required in order to draw out the extreme bokeh.

Both close up and  at normal distances it looks good and free of purple fringing, so not just a one trick pony.

Good the lens is out in the wild - perhaps this bodes well for many countries seeing local distribution on the 10th September.

No. Leica owns a patent on the 6-bit coding (since 2006), and is not licensing it.

But VM lenses (and some of the Zeiss ZM lenses made by Cosina) do have a shallow trough machined into the back of the lens mount that will protect home-made "black spots" better than the slick flat surface on Leica's lenses.

The trough works as advertised (my markings, made with a Sharpie™ permanent marker, have been in place and functioning for over a year with no damage from wear and tear), and the Leica code patterns generally work just as well for C/V lenses. E.G. "75 Summilux f/1.4" for a 75 Nokton f/1.5.

HOWEVER it pays to know a little about optics, and be able to compare the exact lens designs to choose the best match - not all "35mm" or wider lenses behave the same.

For the 50mm Heliar Classic f/1.5, you may want to experiment with ID'ing the lens via the menus first, as a "50mm Summilux pre-ASPH" and as a "50mm Summilux ASPH" - just to see if you notice any differences with corrections for vignetting. THEN add the 6-bit code markings for whichever seems better (if any).

I was quite interested when this lens was announced but as more and more "hey look at this craaaazyy bokeeee" images are released I'm concerned that it's a bit of a one-trick pony. I'd still really like to see some closed-down a bit f2.8/f4/f5.6 images to see if it can work as a "normal" 50 like my Noct f1. Am I missing somewhere this is explored in more detail or is it all go-swirly-or-go-home??

Too new (see the "just shipped" posts above) for many examples yet beyond Voiglander's own. But expect a tidal wave in a few days. ;)

Voigtländer does make a perfectly good, and more "straightforward," 50mm f/1.5 Nokton II, if the one-trick isn't enough.

I don't use 50s at all these days, but I'll be interested to see how C/V's glass-bending works in this case, just for reference.

Yes that's probably where I'm heading. I'm looking for a "cheap" alternative to my 50 Lux ASPHs (back down to a black one (lighter) and a chrome one (first Leica lens and maybe my favourite?) having sold my black chrome copy via Ivor at Red Dot as the hood/filter issue was too annoying.

Notwithstanding the fact that I agree with the concept of "It's just a tool" I found myself several times last weekend poking the Lux through scratchy wire fencing, shooting in spray from the East river and bouncing off people/things in NYC and realised that a "user" lens might be a good idea...

Seems like the national distributors are shipping to direct customers nice and quickly  🙂 I presume Cameraquest in the US; for me, in the UK, it was Robert White.

You are correct.  Lucky to have Cameraquest, Popflash, and a Leica Store nearby.  Just went 2 days ago to the Leica store to browse; was told the waiting list for the 35 APO Summicron was quite long.

Mine's just arrived.

First impressions are that it's a beautifully made lens.  A joy to behold!

The focus ring is smooth and the aperture detents are positive with clicks that are almost silent.  It looks gook on my MP.

Finder blockage is acceptable at minimum focus with the lens hood on and virtually non-existent otherwise.

 So far so good!

Looks gorgeous! Now I look forward to seeing what images it's capable of producing!

Thanks for the pics!  Looking forward to some of your test shots.  I note that the focus throw is rather short, which can be both good (quick focusing) and bad (DoF calibration less accurate).

Yes, the focus throw is shorter than I expected but I'm used to that with my 50mm elmar-m f2.8.
