Andreas, please set up a survey for peelers vs non-peelers and we'll see who here is OCD.

So I'll confess: I'm generally a protective plastic remover but I've never taken it off a Leica baseplate.
Maybe I'll challenge myself and take them all off this weekend. Or maybe not

My first M6 arrived without the protective film on the botton plate, which might not have been provided in 1985.  My recently acquired M6 (newer) still has the protective film in place.  I'm thinking about peeling it off.

What say you?

Strange - I bought my M6 in 1985, and it has the bottom protective film on it. In fact, still there in good shape, still protecting from scratches.

Can you buy replacement plastic films for when you have to sell the camera?

Many years ago when Aki Asahi just started selling covers etc, they included a couple bottom stickers (not original ofcourse) with an order of eye-protectors I placed. Never used them and haven't checked if they still sell them. http://www.aki-asahi.com

I peeled it off from my M9 at the moment I was sure I would keep it, that was after about 8 or 9 years. On the other hand, I’m quite sure I will never sell my MM1 (from 2012) but I didn’t yet peel its film off. On my chrome M7 which I bought in ~2019 it’s still there, although there’s a fold in it. I think I would sooner peel it off from a chrome version than from a black one. However, the M9 wears off to messing, which is nice, the MM1 is anodized aluminium which is as the black M6 I guess. Long story short: there’s no simple protocol for this decision, although I think that the phrase ‘that’s a personal decision’ is too easy to stop the conversation.

When one of my M2 cameras came back from my repairer he had added a protective plastic film on the base.

Was that long ago? And was it clear that it wasn’t the original one?

all off this weekend.

I confess that this thread instigated an impulse in me to pull them off my MM1 and M7. For both the decision was different. For the M7 I inhibited my impulse, for the MM1 I made a positive choice the keep it on as a protection. Some films tend to come off after a hot travel, others are attached very precise by OCD employees at Leica and may cause problems when trying to get rid off.

the sticker is still sticky,

That’s a disaster too, sticker removal liquid stinks and this is very hard to vent. I want my M’s to smell fresh every new day.

A year or two ago, definitely new it didn’t have one before.

sticky label adhesive usually cleans off with white spirit, thinners or just spray furniture polish.

It was my M4 that had a sticker added when it was serviced, not the M2. I can’t imagine they used such things in 1967 when it was made. It’s more a fussy dainty thing to add, like little rubber protectors to stop strap rings scratching the body. In the 60’s they still made solid rugged cameras that did not need wrapping in cotton wool.

Nearly two pages of posts discussing whether or not to remove the protective plastic on the bottom of a camera?  This is one of those threads that causes people to mock Leica owners.

Could be a reason why so many Leica owners will spend £10k+ on a Leica and a lens but never print a single image

Also I have one on and one off, so I'm just weird I guess...
