 M Monochrom mk1, 50mm Summilux ASPH.

I think the 50mm Summilux ASPH is a fantastic lens. A nice blend of smooth backgrounds and modern sharpness. I even like the way it flares.

There's just that one tiny annoyance - you sometimes get the dreaded 'onion ring' effect in out of focus highlights, because the glass blanks are moulded now, rather than ground.

Well, OK - maybe one more tiny fly in the ointment with this lens. It feels like it could do with an extra aperture blade or two, because when you stop it down, the out of focus highlights gain a jagged look to them. In fairness, I think more recent Leica lens designs have addressed this

But those very minor gripes aside, here's a shot I got back in 2014. M Monochrom mk1, 50mm Summilux ASPH, shot at F1.4.

I took it from the bar of the Lower Kersal Social Club in Salford, England. There's no light in that place. The floor is sticky, and you get bumped and jostled.

And if you know The Fall, you'll know that's Mark E Smith snarling into the microphone. Sadly no longer with us. I'm very grateful to my M Monochrom and Leica lenses for enabling me to get the pictures of him that I did in those dark places in the middle of nowhere. There's no other camera system like the Leica M.
