"Nice photos" is subjective... here are some 35 AA photos, all wide open where the difference from the FLE is most apparent.

M10, 35AA at f/1.4

M9P + 35AA SOOC

Probably one of the best combo for environmental portraits IMHO.

In the case of the KOB...is said to use plastics parts that are more prone to break and therefore the German copies are more durable and more expensive...

I have a German one that I bought new in Hong Kong in 1988. The construction of the front element is problematic. In 2103, I had a CLA done at Wetzlar because the aperture ring because was so loose that it wouldn't stay on a click stop. That cost 525 Euros. I'm not sure but the problem could have been caused by using the rectangular, plastic lens hood that came with the lens: there was a need to jiggle it each one was putting it on and taking it off — but, then, that would be a design problem.

Two years later, the aperture ring was all greasy and I had an f-stop problem again, which cost 300 Euros to fix at Wetzlar. I had it fixed nevertheless because I "needed" the lens; but I wonder how much I really needed it because I cannot recall the reason. Now, the aperture ring is just okay, but without the crispness of the clicks on the f-stops that one expects on a Leica lens. Not happy with the construction of this lens.

Hi Mitch,

I have had my 1988 35 Summilux AA for five years, fitted with a large vented e46 hood . Never had any issue. Very happy with mine and its rendering.

Best, Jean-Marc.

I was recently lucky and got a 35AA, which has been a dream lens of mine for a while.   And it hasnt left my camera since then.  I am truly in love with the rendering, the colors and just about everything about it.   The copy I got is definitely more on the user condition side of things, with plenty of wear, no box or original hood, but doesnt seem to need any CLA or any sort of work.  I much prefer it having wear and tear than being perfect.  I want to use it at the end of the day, and if its been in a safe its whole life, I will be scared to.

If you are ever on the fence about this lens, its worth every penny.   I have used the 35FLE and I would take the 35AA over the 35FLE any day of the week.

They are excellent ! But.... was it the lens ? or the photographer ? 😜

I am sure both! the sharpness of the subjects and the soft and distinct nature of the backgrounds really give great emphasis on the folks. Seeing them in that setting is also special!
