@Kcwong @Stephencdean @RF’sDelight I've been bit by this 28 cron bug and have been thinking of it.

How have you been enjoying the lens so far? I suppose it is no different to the standard black but I always wonder if Leica manufacturers the special versions even with greater tolerances etc?

Really really enjoying this lens. I bought it purely for what it offered performance-wise compared to 28 Elmarit ASPH v2, and I happened to score a generously discounted open-box before the 2021 price hike. But the color and the hood are really something to admire. I haven’t noticed any difference regarding tolerances, it functions as expected.

And it seems like it may in fact be a limited run, for the collector in you.

Fully agree to @caloosajo comment here. Especially because IQ, functionality etc. are out of question anyway.

Since I got the Safari Cron the Summilux 28 sits on the shelf for months now. I still want to do a comparison of

  • Safari Cron vs. Summilux 28 at f2.0
  • Safari Cron vs. Elmarit 28 Asph. at f2.8

Ar least one of these three 28mm lenses needs to go… I guess.😎

My personal use of 28mm is either when I expect to photograph rooms and their interior or when I expect a dense situation e.g. with people at a table and want to have some of the surrounding atmosphere still in the picture – with an extra space compared to 35mm to crop afterwards.

f4.0

Mine has just been delivered!

As much as I liked my v1 28 summicron asph, the plastic hood was just ridiculous.   This one is just perfect, exactly what a summicron should be.

Beautiful Safari lens. I have one as well and it’s difficult to choose which 28mm to use now as I have three now (Summilux, Summaron, and the Summicron Safari). I just love the Cron’s special Safari hood design, but I find myself gravitating always toward the Lux as it’s such an inspiring lens. I hate to give up on the Safari Cron (as I have a Safari body) but I’m just not using it. Decisions….. 🙂

We're travelling in Sri Lanka and India for a couple of months (or more) from next January, C-19 permitting, and the  28mm Safari is a lens I've had my eye on for quite a while for this trip.  I did consider the 28mm summilux but I like summicron lenses  more than I need f1.4

If you've made the significant outlay for the 28mm summilux, you'd be a fool not to use it!

The 28mm Safari is very nicely finished and looks good on my BP MP.  The retractable hood makes the Safari lens seem smaller than the V1 is even without it's huge hood fitted!

I'm tempted to get the 90mm summicron Safari now as a nice pair for our travels!

Hey @Ouroboros!
I see you use it on your BP MP... I mostly use my BP MP these days and always wondered what this matte dark green finish would look on a shiny BP... would you be so kind maybe making a few quick photos of your BP MP with the Safari 28?
Thanks!

Could anyone here share a pictures of the finder blockage of the Safari edition with the hood extended / not extended? ( a picture made through the viewfinder )  Would be interesting to see the difference to the normal version! Thanks!

Thanks a lot! How do you like the hood in comparison to the detachable hoods ?

@Kriehuber I prefer the these extendable hoods (like the 50 Lux) over the detachable hoods. I have both types but just find the extendable hoods way more convenient, as well as taking up less space in my bag.  I wonder why Leica doesn’t bring this ‘Safari only’ extendable hood to the standard 28cron?

That's what I thought. I am now on my way to pick up a new 28 Summicron Safari from my local Leica store, despite already owing multiple 28s and among others the modern Summicron. The hood looks great and after picking up the Safari my normal Summicron probably will sit on the shelf. I wish they would make this in Silver like they made the 28 Lux.

Anyone else interested in a new green Summicron 28mm Safari?
My local Leica dealer in Germany still has one.

Seems like the right thread to drop this into. Picked up what was probably the last new/sealed 28 Cron Safari lens in the US this week. Haven’t seen a photo of an SL2-S Reporter with a Safari lens yet, only photos of them on the M10-P Reporter.

The color match between the Reporter and Safari is very close in real life, but digital photos seem to exaggerate the difference. I like this lens on my black M11, but so far I find this arrangement more satisfying to use. It very much reminds me of the old R3 Safari and matching lens I used to own.

I think I will have to track down the 50 and 90 as well.
