My cats told me that I should stop bothering them with my camera every evening. ;-)
So I took a portait of myself today.
The lens was a Leitz Summarit f:1.5 / 50mm from 1950 and I used it wide open. The camera was on a tripod, the Techart AF adapter took care of focussing and I used a cable release. Light was provided by the normal room illumination.
The black and white conversion was done with Silver Efex Pro 2m settings: "normal", film profile Kodak Plus X 125 PX Pro.

Taken during one of our Rhino de-horning operations. We're dehorning all of our Rhinos at Zuka & other game reserves, it's an ongoing exercise as the horn re-grows.

By removing the horns there's no incentive for poachers to kill the animals. I'm holding a 5.5kg Rhino horn worth approx. USS$1.5m on the black market. The horns are taken off- site & destroyed.

I have mixed emotions there, Mike, as I feel sure you do too.  It's the lesser of two evils but protecting the animals is paramount and I hope it doesn't stress them too much.  Thank you for your resolve and dedication and thank you for helping to preserve our fauna.  Chapeau.

Pete.

Thanks for your input & comments Pete, appreciated.

Without wanting to derail this thread, a bit of background; Rhino dehorning is an extreme measure of last resort. It is hardcore conservation, a very costly exercise involving helicopters to track & dart the Rhinos, wildlife veterinarians  & specialised field staff. The strategy seems to be working, we have so far seen a reduction in poaching pressure.

To your point,  as brutal as the process appears, it's worth noting that there's no pain or suffering caused to the Rhino as a result of dehorning. It's a very emotional experience for all involved, I've seen seasoned, hardened guys who've worked in the bush all their lives shed a few tears.

Apologies, we can get back to portraits now.

Thanks
