Not a self-portrait, but one a friend took way back in 1994 when I was shooting the Rose Bowl game. Seems like a lifetime ago.

A compass. How quaint! 😃

JD, Just to explain the significance of the compass, Erl and some other forum members and I were on a weekend in Venice, Italy in 2010.  Erl lives in Melbourne, Australia, and he was using his map and compass to guide 2 or 3 of us through the tangled back streets to our hotels.  We'd had a 'chilled refreshment or two' for dinner but, weirdly, the map appeared to be wrong.  We knew which direction we were supposed to be walking in thanks to Erl's compass but we weren't finding the landmarks we were expecting.

Erl couldn't quite fathom it either because he regularly relied on compasses and maps to find his way around in Aussie and in other countries.  Eventually we worked out that the compass was sending us in the wrong direction when we compared it with the compasses in our in mobile phones.

That's when we discovered that the other end of the compass needle is coloured in compasses that are made in the southern hemisphere so that the needle points south instead of north.  This called for further 'chilled refreshments' to make up for walking round in circles before continuing on to our hotels. 😇

Erl retired his compass when I met him in Melbourne in 2017 and he very kindly donated it to me as a memento, which I still carry with me as a keepsake.  Hence my pointing it out in the picture.

It still keeps perfect time.

Pete.

It just doesn’t get any better than that. 🤣
